So, i'm sure most of you remember Brand-shei, the dunmer who was raised by Argonians and was searching for his actual heritage. Well I grew very fond of him and felt just awful about framing him even though it was to get to Esbern. (especially since you can still talk to him about solving the mystery of his past while he's in jail.)
Cue my plot-bunny. I want the DB to feel terribly guilty about framing Brand-shei. (He/she never had any intentions of joining the Thieves Guild to be clear.) They just thought framing him was the only viable option at that time. So the DB finally decides to sneak into Riften jail and free him (perhaps under the context of delivering the proof of his heritage to him if they hadn't already.) and confesses/tries to explain his/her reasoning.
DB can be whatever race and gender you like.
Bonus points: Brand-shei is understandably angry/upset and refuses to go with the DB or acknowledge an apology at first. DB helped him find his heritage prior to framing him. (This would make the potential escape doubly angsty.) Romance between the two. Though, i'd rather this didn't become the focus of the story.
*DLC related spoiler for this bonus* If you've played at least some part of Dragonborn, maybe the DB takes Brand-shei with them to Solstheim and attempts to get his/her new political allies to help him reestablish himself in some manner.
