Pick someone who's universally hated - Thonar Silver-Blood, Maven Black-Briar, Erikur, Nazeem, Elenwen - and show us their point of view. You don't have to try to make us like them or approve of their actions or even sympathize with them, just get into their head and show us why they think they're being reasonable.
(I realize that "universally hated" is kind of subjective, but I think most of the characters above are pretty free of redeeming features, as opposed to someone like Ulfric who tends to inspire strong feelings on both side of the love/hate spectrum, or Mercer who manages to be kind of a magnificent bastard while being heinous.)
