The first time I played the game I freaked out when I didn't see him at the Battle of Solitude and went sprinting back to Riverwood, afraid that he'd died somehow without me knowing. I was a little embarassed about it afterward, actually, but seriously. He's one of the few people in Skyrim who saves the Dragonborn's life, and not the other way around. I felt like I owed him.
