Whether he had known it or not, Navin had grabbed the Daedra's attention from the moment he walked into the Winking Skeever.
He had been Sam for a few days now, relaxing in Solitude and waiting patiently for somebody interesting enough to come along. He had spent an hour or two considering the innkeeper's sarcastic but vaguely handsome son, before determining that Corpulus would never accept him vanishing into the night with his heir. Some mortals had no sense of humor, it seemed.
Fortunately for him, the traveler was interesting, and at long last, he could move on. He was a Redguard, tall and lean but broad in the back, and his dark eyes scanned the room as if he too was looking for something to peak his interest. When he took a seat at the bar and instantly ordered a tall bottle of ale, Sam was at his side.
“You're really going to waste your time with that?” he asked, feigning disgust. The stranger looked over, the hint of a smile playing on his lips.
“Do you suggest something better?” he replied. Sam nodded and looked up at the bartender, shooting him a wink.
“I do indeed. My dear Corpulus, remember those bottles I brought when I arrived? Would you mind pouring them for me?” The disgruntled look in his eyes hinted that he did in fact mind, but he obliged all the same. “Now,” the Daedra continued, raising his tankard. “This is a particularly strong brew, only for the strong of stomach. I'll bet you a powerful staff that you can't outdrink me.” Now the Redguard laughed openly, taking the other tankard.
“Please. You obviously have no idea who I am,” he replied teasingly. As if it had only just occurred to him as well, he raised the mug, winking over the rim. “My name's Navin.”
“And I'm Sam. A pleasure to meet you.” With that, he took a long swig of his ale, and looked back to find that his new friend had followed suit. “Not bad, my friend. Corpulus! Another round, if you would.”
“You have no idea what you're getting into, boy,” Navin remarked as he took his mug back again.
And neither do you, the prince thought. Outwardly, he only smiled and winked again, raising his tankard to his mouth one more time. Navin was swaying a little bit, but his self-assured smile was proof enough.
“One more,” he slurred, leaning on the counter and letting Corpulus refill his tankard to the brim.
“That's the spirit,” Sam urged, pushing his own aside and watching as the Redguard tilted his head back once more. “Atta boy! Looks like you've won...but you're not looking so good, all of a sudden...”
“I'm fine,” Navin replied loudly, beaming. “But...all of a sudden, I wanna go somewhere! Wanna come with me?” Sam nodded politely and took his friend's arm, leading him out into the streets of Solitude. But it was Sanguine who did all the rest.
