Ariella’s pace slowed when Whiterun came into view. She swallowed, heart pounding in her chest as she looked at the city. She couldn’t quite keep her eyes off the gates as she walked towards it. She was practically begging the god’s for an excuse to not have to return.
This city just kept calling her back, it seemed. In the months she had been gone she’s received countless bounties, letters from the Companions and even a request from Ulfric Stormcloak to help the Stormcloaks with their campaign against the city.
Every time she saw the Whiterun seal the letters had been promptly thrown away. She read the ones from the Companions though; letters that were mostly updates from Aela.
In truth, Ariella didn’t want to receive them. She was trying desperately to forget about that place and while burying herself in work was a good strategy those damned letters were constantly reminding her.
It was nice to know that Kodlak had been cured along with Aela; who had now assumed her full role as Harbinger. The Companions were moving on with their lives just as Ariella knew they would. The update letters would soon become less frequent until they stopped all together, that was something Ariella was certain of.
After the first letter Ariella had sent back the amulet she had received when she became a circle member. She had also requested that Aela stop sending official Companions updates; Aela had chosen to ignore that request.
The more steps Ariella took the heavier they felt, she felt like the bow strapped to her back and the sword on the hip were weighing her down. The Breton had told herself that she would return the gifts she’d received if she found better weapons; truthfully she knew she couldn’t quite give them up.
At the gate a Stormcloak officer nodded to her and helped her open the city doors. She stood just inside the gateway for a long while. The city was so familiar and nothing had changed. In a way it felt like home and that made Ariella feel sick; this place would never be her home, not now.
