So i was thinking, the Dragonborn's of the past, such as Emperor Reman, Talos and the Septim dynasty as a whole really didn't kill many dragons, sure they killed them, but the fact that Alduin called so many dragons to life means that their souls weren't devoured. Also you have to remember that Alduins first defeat wasn't at the hands of a dragonborn, but by 3 Voices using an Elder Scroll.
So, no other dragonborn in all the ages has encountered or slain so many dragons as the current dragonborn. Dozens of them have fallen to his prowess, he has mastered every shout the Greybeards know, plus Dragonrend. Yet for all his power and accomplishment he is still mortal.
At least until he dies, and then things get weird, his body flares up and transmutes into light, a la the soul absorption animations, but reconstitutes itself as a dragon. Black as night, with all his Dovahkiin powers and the new armour plating of his dragon form. Paarthurnax is now back in his original position as second most powerful Dov, whilst the Dov!DB has to decide whether his loyalty to his old race outweighs his newfound loyalty to the dov.
All of Skyrim is collectively crapping their pants because their saviour is now a dragon.
What happens next, does Dov!DB become the world eater that Alduin was meant to be, does he decide to enslave the joor, or does he do something else.
TLDR: Dragonborn dies after mainquest, only to transform into a dragon. Skyrim wets itself and hopes for another dragonborn to appear.
Dov!DB. It takes a dragonborn to kill a dragonborn.
