You would have thought that after the Umbra/Umbriel debacle, that Clavicus Vile would have learned not to invest too much of his power into his toys or minions.
But as we can see in his quest in Skyrim, he hasn't because whilst he's separated from Barbas, he's stuck in his shrine. Which to me says that Barbas is essentially Vile's power.
So at the end of A daedra's best friend, Clavicus takes Barbas back, just long enough to reclaim all of his power, then kicks Barbas out in a human form a la Redguard. His parting words to the Dragonborn before he legs it with the Rueful Axe consist of "You like the mutt so much, he's yours now, i'll see you when you die Barbas."
Now the Dragonborn has a daedra's human shaped minion/aspect to look after, because it's kind of his fault he's mortal-ish now. And there is much smut. Kinky smut, but not of the bathroom kink variety.
By Human i mean mortal by the way, so any man/mer is an option. Maybe even Khajiit, but no argonians. Otherwise go nuts.
