Did you ever see the film Chasing Amy? This guy called Holden gets together with a "lesbian" called Alyssa, and gradually finds out more and more about her sexual history before she was with him. But the fact remains that there's nothing quite like what Dyce did with Rune and Calder, and Martin used to adore being used like that, and Alix can't ever replicate that because there's only one of him. Although I just thought "What about the Skull of Corruption?" and looked at Vaermina's Daedric Quest in Oblivion, and it turns out not to be anything too unethical, apart from leaving the wizard Arkved having nightmares for the rest of his life. Although you CAN kill him... So now Alix is wondering about duplicating himself, and what exactly that would involve, while Martin is warning him not to go playing with Daedric Artifacts that he doesn't understand...
Alix is insecure because he doesn't think he's anything special and is worried that Martin is only with him because of circumstances. Then even more so because of the whole "The Emperor needs to get married to a woman to ensure the line of succession" thing. Poor silly boy.
