He was standing behind a table in front of her, bent over what looked like a map. His long blonde hair fell over his shoulders. He wore armor and a coat made of thick fur. She had never actually seen the Jarl of Windhelm, and she really wanted to just inch away, and pray he never noticed her standing there.
"Come." His voice was deep and smooth, different from any other she'd heard in a way she couldn't explain. Mais flinched a little, realizing he was talking to her. She swallowed hard and stepped a little closer.
"I, um, I was looking for Jorleif," she said softly.
He glanced up and regarded her for a moment, then straightened. "He's asleep."
"Oh, I'm very sorry, I'll...come back." Mais took a few steps back, intent on getting away from that piercing gaze as quickly as possible.
"Was there something you needed?" Ulfric's deep voice drew her up short.
Mais swallowed deeply and turned back to him. "I've, um, I've been investigating the murder for him. I wanted to report what I've found."
The jarl came around the table to stand near her, his map forgotten. "And what have you found?" He seemed genuinely concerned about these murders.
"The murderer has been using Hjerim for the attacks. There was a hidden room with some kind of alter inside. And I found this." She pulled the strange amulet out of her pocket and held it up. Ulfric held out his hand and Mais hesitantly handed it to him. The man was huge compared to her, tall and broad. Even his hands were large. He frowned at the talisman. "I thought it may help us find out who did this."
"If it can be traced back to it's owner, yes. I've never seen this kind of amulet before, though," Ulfric frowned. He handed the necklace back to her. "Calixto Corrium may have an idea as to it's origins. But I would suggest going to him during the daytime."
Her cheeks burned. Was he teasing her? "Yes, thank you, my jarl."
Ulfric peered down at her closely. "What is your name?"
"Mais, my jarl."
"I look forward to seeing what you find, Mais. Come to me when you have information on that amulet," Ulfric said. Mais nodded slowly, and the jarl turned back to his map, obviously done with the conversation. Mais quickly left the palace, a little unnerved by her first meeting with the jarl.
