I love Kodlak, he's one of those wise father figures we all long to have in our lives. I think it is important to remember though, that he is/was a warrior. Warriors accept that they might die at any moment, and most just want to die WELL. Consider Kodlak, who has been sick with the rot for years, feeling conflicted. Would he want to fight his last battle or or go out with his tail between his legs? No Kodlak would die with his sword in hand, protecting what he loved, what he believed in.
Kodlak must die... :( it's important for the characters. Plus there is always the burden of guilt to bear. After Skjor's death, the DB usually goes off with Aela,hunting Silver Hand, which is a direct cause for Kodlaks death. The characters need to face that knowledge and deal with the consequences.IMHO
