update, what's an update? This was originally a one shot, but OP's request and a few hours browsing the UESP dragon site gave me some ideas, and Now i'm enslaved to the muse. Srsly this language was really well thought out.

Aeyla prided herself on being calm. As a novice mage back in her home of High Rock, she had learned the hard (and painful) way that emotions and fire did not mix well.

Even so, she was hard pressed not to scream in horror at the slitted visage that gazed back at her in the relatively calm waters of the bay.

What on Nirn was happening to her? Was this some curse of Alduin, or was this the inevitable result of an immortal soul packed into a mortal cage?

Her anxious musings were cut short as a courier approached her.

"Um...Dragonborn, ma'am?"

She squinted at him, trying to hide her eyes.

"How do you know who I am?"

"Jarl Ulfric wishes to see you, ma'am."

Great. Now that insufferable Jul Thur wished to see her. Aeyla felt the beginnings of that indescribably deep and ancient pull rise up in her stomach. Rather than push it away, she instead embraced it. To stand face to face with the leader of the Bronne would take more then just mortal courage, particularly if the rumours of him possessing the Thu'um were true.

As Aeyla entered the hall, head held high and shoulders straight, she could see the whispers of the stormcloak officers begin. She caught a few of them.

"A woman? A Breton woman is the Dragonborn?"

Idiots. She had no time for their whispers, her eyes, still yellow and slitted, staring straight into those of Ulfric.

She came to a stop roughly 10 feet from his chair, with him still slouched arrogantly in it.

His voice boomed out.

"So,you're the Dragonborn? Yes, I remember you on that cart...hmph. Dragonborn or not, I hear you caused a disturbance amongst my men earlier."

Seriously? he was bothering someone like her over this? She had expected a feast, an admittance of inferiority, a concession of some sort. Did this Jul not know to whom, to what he was speaking?

"Aam? Lost Daar Pah? Ask Kendovi Se Nii. Vodreh Tinvaak Wahi."

She inwardly laughed as the hall grew silent and Ulfric's eye began to twitch.

"Why don't you try saying that again, in the language of this land."

"Niid. Losti Unslaad Sil. Kosi Joorre. Losti Honaan Thu'um. Nisu Hon Rottei?"

He stood now, all pretence of civility gone.

"You are in MY hall, and you will speak MY tongue!"

"Geh, Tinvaaki. Joor Tinvaak. Thu'umi Nid, Bron Thur, Noki. Unt Wah Ahraani, Sahloi."

With a wordless cry of rage, Ulric stepped forward, drawing his sword.

Fus

The word, barely whispered, escaped her lips. Ulfric flew back as if hit by a troll, crashing against the stone seat of his throne.

Her blood sang. This was the best the Joor could do? This was the man who claimed the thu'um?

She whirled around, to the men and women who were moving as if stuck in marshland. She would not kill them, not today. A warning should suffice.

Yol

A wall of fire sprang forth as she turned in an arc, halting their advance. As she ran from the hall, ran from the city in a whirl of snow and swords, she thought to herself that maybe, just maybe, Alduin was on to something.

Joor sure were fun to mess with.

Here we go again. Man its fun stringing together sentences. I'm sure ol' Paarth would faceclaw himself with embarresment of my butchery, but I tried my damndedest to obey the rules of Dragon grammar. (can you imagine dragon kindergarten? Bad enough kids stumblnig around shouting random words, imagine if one of those could freeze or burn you!)

translations:

Jul Thur:

Aam? Lost Daar Pah? Ask Kendovi Se Nii. Vodreh Tinvaak Wahi.:

Niid. Losti Unslaad Sil. Kosi Joorre. Losti Honaan Thu'um. Nisu Hon Rottei?:

Geh, Tinvaaki. Joor Tinvaak. Thu'umi Nid, Bron Thur, Noki. Unt Wah Ahraani, Sahloi :

Y'all should know Fus and Yol.

Captcha: complete exitice. A very complete exit onto the ice, indeed.

I am completely loving this story! I think your use of the dragon language is very effective. Given it's not a complete language and not set out for easy use, you're managing the impossible with a remarkable amount of panache. Your characterization of the DB is intriguing. The dragonish impulses and instincts are very well done. You have managed to imply there has been a big change bu that the DB is almost oblivious is very clever. This is actually very realistic. Disorders or damage that change the personality are often insidious that way.

Trust me, I know all about how damn hard that language is to write. I spent 30, count 'em THIRTY MINUTES Ctrl-Fing over and over on the UESP dragon language page, finding words and checking out tenses and possessives and all that grammar jazz. 30 minutes of no writing whatsoever, just trying to find words. There is no Dragon word for "question", did you know that? or "ask" or "query". There's no words for "I/mine" or "you/your" (there is a word for 'we'. It's 'Mu'). Apparently an 'i' is added at the end of a words to indicate a singular possessive (Speech/language = Tinvaak. YOUR speech = tinvaaki. MY Speech also = tinvaaki). 'u' is added to indicate plural possesive (our, their). 'aan' is added to indicate past tense (or rather, to indicate something has already happened, since the dragon language, being spoken by a race outside of time, has no proper tenses. Thus, 'aan' has been corrupted by me to mean past tense as well.) to indicate a plural, one duplicates the last letter and adds an 'e'. 'Joor' becomes 'joorre', 'Rot' becomes 'rotte'.

Good lord but I'm like a crabby ol' english teacher but for Dov-tinvaak instead.

Glad ya like it. Check back today or tommorow (2 days from now at latest) for an update.
