Fill - M!DB/Cicero - Devour.

Couldn't pass up this prompt, so I give you Male Altmer Dragonborn&Listener/Cicero. They have a very odd relationship. You have been warned.

--

It started with the eyes; the faintest gleam of yellow in that familiar glare, lurking somewhere behind the milky white of his damaged irises, a bare hint of hunger in the way they narrowed that hadn't been present before. The Listener has always been dangerous, even before he took on the role, even back on the dirt road north of Whiterun when first they met (long ago, now, before the Night Mother spoke, before there sudden purpose and then betrayal, broken tenants, running again, fleeing once more into the darkness. Alone, cast out, cast away. Poor Cicero, who lay laughing, listening to the clash of steel drawing closer, expecting to leap up and dance his way into the Void. Cicero, sweet Cicero, who felt instead the flutter of a healing spell sinking into his bones and the weight of a bare hand on the back of his neck, the whisper of lips against his ear. Keeper, he'd called him. Brother.).

Cicero remembers the way Volanare had looked back then, with a face half-hidden by his cowl, wary in that way that wolves get when they encounter their own kind. Smiling, though, lips pulled taut and crooked in a manner that hinted at the flash of teeth. It's a face – an expression – that he's familiar with now, knows as well as his hands know the handle of a knife, and Cicero may be mad but he's as observant as any assassin – more so, even – and he spends more time with the Listener than any of them. This isn't mere bloodlust, to which the two of them are both so very intimately acquainted (the palpable rush of heat, the feel of muscle stretching, the song a blade makes as it moves through air and skin and the crack of it finding bone – the shiver of music moving through him, the laughter, the dancing, the joy of it). It's something bigger, something so much more, and Cicero doesn't know quite what it is but he likes it all the same.

And it keeps growing brighter with every dragon they bring down.

"Listener," he says, two inches away from Volanare's chest and peering up, his grin a white slash across a blood-splattered, smoke-streaked face. Cicero is growing used to tackling dragons, knows where to stick his knives, knows how to duck and twirl and sever membrane to keep it on the ground – but he maybe (incredibly) likes this part more, right after it's beaten down to blood and it's bones begin to smoke and crackle. Likes the way the Listener's lips draw back against his teeth, how his eyes narrow, how when the dragon's soul swirls through the air around him Volanare makes a sound, low in his throat, deeper than a growl, and curls his gauntleted fingers around the back of Cicero's neck.

Presses their foreheads together, so close Cicero can see, quite clearly, how yellowed his eyes have become, how fiercely inhuman. "Brother," Volanare calls him, in a voice that makes the air shiver, that rumbles down the back of his spine. Something heavy, protective, possessive too it, his fingers tightening, the metal biting into the back of Cicero's neck just above his armor, and Cicero laughs, suddenly, freely, pulled too close to dance but moving his body all the same. "The dragon is dead!" he sings, and then giggles, stilling in Volanare's grip and dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "The Listener has eaten him!"

Volanare draws his head back, laughing, even as he pulls him closer, fingers slipping from his neck to curl comfortably about his shoulder and draw him into an embrace. "I did not eat him, brother," he says, and Cicero shrugs, fingers smearing blood across Volanare's cheek as he reaches up, traces the arch of a prominent cheekbone and presses one finger to the Listener's temple.

"Cicero thinks the Listener did," he says, grinning. "But faithful Cicero will not say a word."

This fill sent shivers down my spine. Beautifully done, and Cicero's twisted thought processes are spot on, as is Volanare's dangerous dragon nature showing through. I also liked the little touches of affection between the two, and the way your Listener's rather protective of Cicero despite (because of) the dragon souls.

If you were ever to write more in this universe, dear A!A, this passerby would be very pleased to read it!

A!A here, very glad you liked it! I was a little worried about working more from Cicero's pov than Volanare's, so I'm happy that actually worked out :)

There will most certainly be more written about these two - they have an interestingly co-dependent relationship (which seems to be getting more possessive as time goes by), and it's just too much fun to write.

Awesome fill, A!Anon. Very intense and amazing descriptors. I always love stories from Cicero's point of view when well done, and I think this fill does that beautifully.
