The Fair and the Dragon 3/?

Maren cursed as she walked back to the gates of Solitude. She had gotten a small cut across her arm, one a seasoned warrior such as herself shouldn’t have received. She smiled at the memory of Elisif herself saying those words but then cursed herself for her stupidity.

She said a small cut but once you’ve been mauled by dragon talons an inch deep, 10 inch long cut to the arm doesn’t seem like much. She had roughly bandaged it but knew she would need a priest or priestess to heal it fully. She had always thought learning restoration magic would be beneficial but her Nordic pride never let her and she always seemed to have better things to do.

She pushed open the gate and ignored the horrified expressions that greeted her as blood dripped from underneath her bandage down her arm and to her fingertips. With her unbloodied hand she flicked a coin to Noster who smiled and thanked her for her kindness.

She thought giving beggars was the least she could do, but right now she wanted the favour of the divines on her side and she wanted to be able to make it to the temple on the other side of the city without Elisif or Erikur seeing her.

She walked past the blacksmith and thought she was home free when she heard “Maren!” She closed her eyes and greeted Erikur who grinned wickedly at her as if he were about to tell on her, she cocked an eyebrow at the childish expression he wore. “The Jarl heard you returned and wants to see you right away, as in right now and you can’t do anything else.”
She sighed and followed Erikur. She made an effort to clean some of the dripped blood and re-wrap the wound, which was mostly clotted now. Erikur snickered as she bandaged herself and she shook her head at the man.

He thought so highly of himself yet had no real claims to any nobility. He was a babe to battle, born into his role no earned, lived a life of spoiled comfort and only ever wanted more instead of appreciating less. She felt, and hoped, that they were polar opposites.

They walked into the Blue Palace and Erikur practically sung that Maren had returned. Maren thought of just turning around and running but her body moved forwards anyway. She climbed the steps and plastered her signature half smile. Elisif at first greeted her with a smile and then it disspeared as her eyes spotted the bandage.

“So much for a seasoned warrior.” Erikur whispered to her as she passed him. She paid him no mind and stood in front of the Jarl.

“How did the job go?” She asked in her gentle voice.

“Fine, they’re all gone now and I don’t think any Forsworn will be moving in anytime soon.”

“Your arm…” Maren looked and saw the bandage had soaked almost right through now.

“A scratch, I was just heading over to the temple when Erikur found me.” Elisif looked almost appalled but nodded.

“Well then I’ll allow you to get back to the temple, but let me rewrap it for you.” Maren lost her composure for a brief moment and then nodded stunned at the kindness, nobility (even a woman like Elisif) usually shied away from blood.

“Jarl Elisif, I’m sure you could find someone within the castle to do that, you shouldn’t… taint yourself.” Erikur said, “I’ll do it myself if need be…”

Maren cringed at the thought of being bandaged up by Erikur. “Erikur, it’s fine a Jarl needs to be compassionate, you told me that.”

Maren dumbly followed the Jarl through to the kitchens still stunned by the offer of what even Maren would consider to be below a Jarl. She sat down at the table and then Elisif went to fetch water and a clean bandage. Maren watched as the young Jarl fussed around and then came back.

She unwrapped the soiled bandage and gasped at the severity of it. “You said a scratch…”
