Re: ArchmageM!Dragonborn + Ulfric Stormcloak. Pushing things too far.

I never did the civil war plot with my DB for just this reason--he retires to run the college since once side is hip-deep in Thalmor and the other would throw him out/try to kill him for not being Nord, so even though supporting a side would possibly end the war and save lives in the long term, he doesn't.

I want to do this, but I've got to figure out how one would go about assaulting the mages college... since there's just the one tiny little bridge to get up to it.

Mass siege weaponry (probably made at the site because it is pretty heavily wooded nearby if I remember correctly) and war of attrition them in to Oblivion. Literally. I don't believe they have any real way to get food magically (Alteration, maybe?) so after a while the Dragonborn would have to surrender if for on other reason than to keep his people from starving to death. If he doesn't surrender than he's going to have a serious problem because the mages will be straining to maintain whatever defenses they have from near constant bombardment, which will leave them weakened when you do decide to march across the bridge. It is still possible that they could turn that strip of stone in to a massive meat grinder but not one so bad that you couldn't get inside. Once you do that and get them in melee...yeah, they're teachers and students, not soldiers.

I figure Ulfric would view this as cowardly, though, and just charge the bridge with him at the forefront because, 'what the hell are a bunch of soft-footed Daedra worshipers gonna do?'. He may have some limited siege thrown in for good measures, but certainly not to the degree that he would need for success. He strikes me as more of a foot soldier slog type than mechanized, judging from the sieges you see in the game.
