Gentle Pokes (1/4)
(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)The sky had just begun to lighten when I was awoken. It was early, much earlier than I normally woke. Gentle pokes into my back had roused me from my slumber and honestly, I couldn't be happier.
I rolled over in bed and whispered softly. "Hush, hush, Ulfgar, you're going to wake Ma," while I rubbed my hands across Thora's belly. I felt two more pokes in response. I wasn't sure if I was feeling my son's feet or fists or even his elbows, as I laughed quietly. I drew one hand across her skin and felt him follow it with his tiny limbs. Delighted, I could have played with him for hours.
"You're son's hungry," my wife said, her voice thick with sleep and her eyes not even open.
I pressed a kiss on her stomach and got up. "What does my son want to eat?" I asked as I strode to the sideboard set up with food. Thora had been hungry pretty much constantly for the last few months, so it had become convenient to have a selection of food in our chambers, rather than having someone running up and down the stairs to the kitchens.
"Um, sweet roll."
"Yup," I replied, picking up her usual request and putting it on a plate. "Meat? We've got ham."
She made a gagging noise. "No ham. Ever. Baby does not like ham." She paused a moment thinking, "Do we have cheese?"
"Edar or goat?"
"Oh, goat cheese, Ulfgar likes that."
Nodding I placed the cheese on the plate and poured her a fresh glass of water. I brought the snack to her and climbed back into bed. Thora munched on her cheese, her eyes still closed and I went back to playing with my son.
Over eight months had passed since we learned Thora was with child. During that time we'd driven the last of the Thalmor from Skyrim, survived one assassination attempt on me and three on her, reduced the Dragon problem, and had made one trip to High Hrothgar.
Thora had insisted on consulting with the Grey Beards on all they knew about Dragonborn prodigy and I took the opportunity to visit my old masters. It had been one of the best things I'd ever done, and again I had to thank my wife, without whom I never would have gone.
Now we were almost to Thora's time. Her midwife had told us the babe would most likely come in about three weeks, but that is could happen at any time at this point. Every morning, I was being woken by my son, as my wife had developed the habit of snuggling up to me during the night. I cherished these times, when it was just me and him, Thora usually dropping back to sleep once she'd eaten. In the quiet of the morning, we would play our touching game and I'd speak to him of what I was thinking about, how I was looking forward to seeing him, and all the many things we would do together.
I was in my fiftieth year, and yet I felt like a young man. I had the worries of an entire nation on my shoulders, still, in these moments I was carefree. I was simply and utterly happy, and so grateful to the amazing woman who'd made this all possible.
