Learning Magic

I imagine traveling with the DB can cause a lot of bodily hazards, so I would like a story about the DB's follower/spouse learning Restoration or Alchemy so they can care for the DB if they get hurt (and themselves as well).

The catch is that follower/spouse isn't really magical, nor has ever really done anything of the sort (maybe even looked down on it before). Do they struggle, or is it surprisingly easy? How does the DB react?

I hope this prompt makes sense.
