But the more he thought about leaving her, the more determined he became to win her back.

The thought that she could be along the road in a tavern, surrounded by Nord men all eager to talk with her, made him sure that she was meant to be his as much as he was already hers. He stood and was a little annoyed that Lydia looked surprised that he was going after her.

“The Bannered Mare?”

“The Bannered Mare.” She confirmed with a firm nod.

He returned her nod in acknowledgement, pushed open the doors of Breezehome and emerged into the cold night air. He headed up to his right, recognizing a swinging sign in the distance and guessing that it must be the tavern he was looking for. He strode on, trying not to think about what he was going to say or what her reaction might be. He had got into this mess by over thinking.

He stopped just before the door. Taking a deep breath, he pushed it open.

He was hit by a wall of noise. There was shouting, laughing and even a little singing and spotted the object of his reluctant affections in the centre of it. She had her arm in front of another Nord woman, who was caught between outrage and embarrassment, and they were both hurling abuse at a man holding a lute who in turn was being backed up by several other Nord men.

Due to the chaos, no one spotted Ghorbash entering and he was grateful that for once he was not greeted by suspicious stares. He approached the argument cautiously, not wanting to get involved with something that was nothing to do with him. However, at that moment he heard one of the Nord men say to Endra,

“Don’t you worry, sweetheart. I know you might be standing up against us now, but later you’ll be on your knees for me.”

Ghorbash knocked the others out of the way and seized the man by the back of his shirt. The man jumped and turned as best he could, aiming a messy punch at him which Ghorbash avoided with ease. He plucked the man from the crowd, everyone’s previous argument now forgotten at this new turn of events, and slammed him against the wall.

“What did you say?” He growled in the man’s face. The man’s eyes bulged as Ghorbash’s grip shifted from his shirt to his neck. “Repeat it to me. I dare you.”

The man gargled and scratched at the orc’s pale green hand. Ghorbash just pushed up, lifting the man onto his toes.

“Put him down!” Came a stern male voice from behind him.

“Down?” Ghorbash grunted. Oh, I will put him down.

With one hand, Ghorbash lifted him fully off the floor and moved his free hand around to the man’s back when he started to thrash so he couldn’t escape. He carried him through the tavern, kicked open the front door and hurled the man outside. He rolled feebly down the steps, wheezing and clutching his throat. The man’s friends pushed past him and stumbled down to help him. They glared back at Ghorbash who still stood tall in the doorway, strong and silent as ever.

They all hurried off and he went back inside, trying to focus on why he came here in the first place. Endra was sat on one of the benches around the fire with the woman she had been defending and she looked up when the orc entered. She didn’t smile but neither was she frowning and Ghorbash felt that he had managed to make a small step forward.

He made his way over to her but before either of them could say anything, the woman beside her said,

“Thank you. Both of you. Mikael would not take no for an answer.”

Endra smiled and Ghorbash felt another rush of affection for her. He couldn’t quite comprehend how she could have such a strong affect on him by doing something as simple as smiling. No one had ever disarmed him as quickly and he wasn’t sure if he enjoyed it or not.

“It is not a problem.” She was saying to the woman. “He should respect you enough to accept your answer, even if it displeases him.”

The woman nodded and thanked them again before standing and leaving them alone. There was a pause before Ghorbash realised he was supposed to be making it up with her rather than remaining in uncomfortable silence. He sat down beside her, took her hand from her lap and held it in his own larger hand. He saw surprise on her face and he took a deep breath again.
