I admit: I do have a terrible crush on old Mercer.
I want Mercer Frey to be secretly in love. No, I don't want him to be happy, and no, I don't want anyone in Skyrim to find out. I'd just like to see his inner battle and moral dilemma as he has to do what he thinks he has to do.
The obvious choice would be the Dragonborn. Maybe he even lures her to Snow Veil Sanctum / tries to kill her there because he is jealous of her close relationship with Brynjolf? (He does say he will greet Brynjolf from her, after all) Maybe he even lets her kill him, because it is easier than to live with the knowledge that the one thing he really wants is the one he can never have?
So many possibilities. In the end, I don't care what it is. I just want to see him broken-hearted. Maybe she even reciprocates, and he will never know? Break my heart, dear Anons :D
