Argis was tired of all those eyes following him and his Thane when they were out. Tired of all their whispers. He wanted to make them stop, to crush their skulls when the words “vampire” and “thrall” were caught by his ears. But the sad face of his Thane always calmed him. He didn’t want to see this face. He wanted her to laugh, to smile. He was starving to see her laughing the ways she did before she joined the Dawnguard. At this time, Mallari was a joyful, radiant woman. At this time, she wasn’t a vampire. If only he hadn’t failed in his attempt to dissuade her to join the Dawnguard... He sighed and drank his mead, looking at her bedroom. He had to dig the past. If his thane needed him, it was now. In spite of the Jarl’s threat of sending to jail all those who’d be caught gossiping on vampirism and his thane, there were still people that came to Vlindrel Hall and who claimed they had things to do with his Thane. But Argis knew that they were lying and just tried to enter his Thane’s house to find evidences.
“I’m sorry but I’m afraid my lady can’t receive you at the moment.” Was all he said each time before throwing the bastard away.
Never letting one enters. The housecarl knew these people were dangerous, that they wanted to find his lady’s coffin and harm her during her sleep. To keep her away from dangers, he guarded her during her sleep. He even bought a dog, Vigilance, to Banning, even though they were already those two strange hounds guarding the house, Garmr and CuSith, which his Thane brought with her when she reappeared, and another dog, Meeko, that she had before he became her housecarl.
The four pets did their jobs quite well: Meeko and Vigilance were guarding the hall, Garmr and CuSith, his Thane’s bedroom. Argis even had the surprise to find the corpse of a spy a morning. The man was covered with bite marks. His Thane decided to report this to the Jarl and took care to say very loudly and distinctly so that anyone in the court could hear that her dogs were feeding on the spy’s corpse. Jarl Igmund didn’t say anything about that, only muttering that it was “her house and that spy deserves what’s happening to him”. Oddly, unwanted visits ceased after this episode. But only for a moment.
