F!DB/Farkas + Barbas: A Dog's Loyalty 3/?

(I'm back at last! The Amielle/Farkas bug has bitten me again and I'm finishing this fill and going straight into another one. Exciting!)

Amielle was on her second goblet of wine and was engrossed in Aela's story about a job she and Skjor had done long ago when she felt a sudden warmth against her back. At first, she thought it might be Barbas up to no good but he was stretched out at her feet, dozing. Then she sneaked a glance to her left where Farkas sat, smiling at the tale. His arm was draped across the back of her chair.

She flushed and cursed inwardly. She wanted to press her back against his arm, to share in the natural warmth of his body but she didn't have the guts. Instead, she sat ramrod straight in her chair, too scared to move a finger in case he saw her and wondered what she was doing.

He laughed suddenly and she saw he and Athis were sharing a joke, something that had completely gone over her head. So she just smiled to make it seem as though she had been paying attention and went back to wondering what she was going to do about this and - more importantly - what she wanted to do about it.

Then she felt something wet touch her fingers. She jumped and her back shoved Farkas' arm off her chair.

Barbas was sat next to her, licking her fingers with an innocent look in his eyes. She scratched under his chin distractedly, forgetting that his innocence was all for show.

Farkas' arm didn't return to the back of her chair and Amielle felt herself getting a little dizzy on too much wine and not enough food. So she excused herself early, standing with a blush when she felt Farkas' eyes on her.

"You're going?" He asked, his expression difficult to read.

"Yes. I've been travelling most of the day. I need some sleep, I think."

He nodded slowly and his eyes trailed down to where Barbas now stood. Amielle thought she saw Farkas' nose twitch when he looked at the dog. She stared between them, trying to work out what was going on. Barbas suddenly let out a growl, his muzzle twitching and his teeth bared.

She whistled and Barbas stopped immediately, heeling. She gave Farkas one final look before setting off down the stairs to her room, Barbas padding along behind her.

Her thoughts remained muddled as she changed into her nightgown and brushed out her long hair. Farkas' behaviour had been odd to say the least. It was almost like...well, like he was like a dog protecting its territory. She frowned and placed the brush on her dresser, tugging idly at the ends of her hair.

"I think he likes you."

She started and turned around to stare at Barbas. She had forgotten he wasn't a normal dog.

"You could have reminded me you were here when I was getting changed!" She hissed, resisting the temptation to thrown her hairbrush at him.

"Why?" He drawled, lying down at the foot of her bed. "Wouldn't miss that. You've got a fine ass."

She actually picked up the hairbrush this time but once again, she caught sight of those innocent eyes and placed it back down. She stared at herself in the mirror. "And you're wrong. I don't think he does like me."

"Oh, yes he does, Imperial. I could smell it on him."

She wheeled around. "What do you mean?"
