The Last Time [2/?]

By time she reached the market stall, she stopped crying and wiped the tears away and looked as though nothing happened. She threw out the old produce that were too ripe to sell and replaced them with younger, fresher specimens. It didn’t take long before several people began to wander and bustle around the markets. She hoped one of them would stop and buy something. Anything. Camilla was especially violent if Ashylia came home with nothing to show for her day. Often, Ashylia would receive crude suggestions from her mother on how to turn a profit faster than selling her pathetic vegetables.

The day went slowly and Ashylia grew desperate as time waned. She only made a paltry sum that she knew wouldn’t satisfy her mother’s greed and wrath. With fear stinging her heart, her thoughts crossed Elrich. She wished she hadn’t abandoned him in the river earlier this morning; he would have come by. He always made her feel better even when she had to return to her mother soon. She shook her head, clearing the thoughts of Elrich from her head.

A part of her wanted to cry and just run away, but she knew she could never possibly survive alone. She was poor, unattractive and too small to be put to work; useless in every imaginable way, just as her mother had told her so many times over the years. “Ash.” A sudden touch stirred her from her thoughts and she looked up at Elrich. Concern plastered his face as he offered a weak smile. She smiled back and looked away, still feeling horribly for leaving him in the waist-deep water of the river.

“Ash… Ca-uh… Can I walk you home?” he asked softly. Ashylia inhaled deeply as she nibbled her lip. “Or can I buy you a tankard of ale?” he offered as he passed a small lavender sprig to her. She smiled and took the flower; Elrich seemed to sigh with relief as he led her to the Merchant’s Inn. They sat at the corner table and she drank her ale slowly, not wanting to go home any time soon. The pair didn’t speak much during their first tankard, but once finished, Elrich requested another round for them.

Ashylia sipped the fresh ale and sighed while her friend seemed to chug his own drink down. Elrich cleared his throat and shifted in his seat anxiously. “Are you hungry?” he asked. Ashylia hesitated for a moment, but nodded before her stomach betrayed her. He immediately leapt out of his seat to request a plate of the inn’s best meats, cheeses and a fresh loaf of bread and a large tankard of mead. “El, are you okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah. I- I’m… Yeah.”

“You seem nervous.” she said, touching his hand. He was trembling; he inhaled sharply at her touch and red flushed his cheeks. He couldn’t think of what to say, but luckily the bartender brought the food and mead Elrich had requested over to their table. Ashylia couldn’t resist digging in; she was starving, only allowed bread and scraps from whatever is left after her mother ate. She ate quickly, then realizing Elrich was staring and stopped. “Sorry.”

“No, no. Eat. This is for you.” he said, sliding the large plate closer. Ashylia hesitated but couldn’t deny her hunger and kept eating. Once the plate was nearly empty, her hunger was definitely satisfied; Elrich took the liberty of finishing off the rest of the plate. They shared a few more tankards of ale before finally deciding to leave.

The pair walked in silence and they reached the massive door to the Temple District. Elrich took a deep breath and blurted out, “Ashylia, I know we barely know each other but I really, really like you and wanted to know if you like me.” His face was hot with embarrassment and he took another deep breath to ease his nerves. Ashylia looked at her friend; he shifted awkwardly as he waited for a reply, but the shy Breton didn’t know how to respond. After another increasingly awkward moment, Elrich cleared his throat loudly, very embarrassed from his confession.
