M!DB/Farkas. Abandoned at the altar.

Date: 2012-08-31 12:18 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
The Dragonborn and Farkas fall in love during the Companions questline and about six months after curing Farkas of the beastblood they're due to get married in the Temple of Mara in Riften.

Farkas never shows up, a publicly humiliated Dragonborn returns to Jorvaskkr to find Farkas fucking one of the female companions in a drunken haze, where he basically tells the Dragonborn that he was just another conquest.

The Dragonborn appoints Aela as his replacement as Harbinger and leaves Whiterun, heading for Winterhold where the College questline happens and he becomes Archmage. He masters the schools of Magicka and funds the rebuilding of Winterhold, but refuses to have a relationship with anyone.

Five years later Vilkas comes to the College because Farkas has caught a rare plague and the Dragonborn is the only person who has ever successfully treated it.

Stick the two ex lovers in a room and show me what happens.

“Arch Mage there’s someone here to see you.” Faralda said.

“I told you I’m not taking visitors right now. They can return once I’ve gotten on top of my paperwork.” The Dragonborn said as he milled through the endless streams of documents.

“Well Tolfdir told him that but the stupid oaf won’t leave.”

“I’m sure a few destruction spells will scare him off.” The arch mage said with a wicked smile.

“I tried already, stupid Companions…” she muttered.

“What did you say?”

“Some oaf from the companions is here, won’t tell us what for name’s Vicky or something…”

“Vilkas?” The Dragonborn felt his mouth go dry.

“Yep that’s it, you want me to tell him to piss off?”

“Show him in, he has five minutes.”
In the short time it took for Faralda to collect the companion the Arch Mage contemplated the reason for the visit to the former Harbinger. Perhaps something had happened to Aela…

“Arch Mage?”

“Yes, show him in.” He replied quickly picking up a quill to make it look like he was in the middle of business.

“Garik-” Vilkas was cut short by the crackling of sparks from Faralda who was in the corner, watching. “Arch Mage, it is good to see you again.”

Garik looked up his heart breaking all over again as he looked at the face that had once been so familiar to him. Twins.

“As it is you Vilkas, may I ask why you have made such a journey from Whiterun? I trust Aela is taking control of Jorrvaskr.” He kept his voice cool and avoided looking at the twin.

“She is a most honourable Harbinger. I’ve come requesting your help.”

“Is there a magic related problem occurring?”

“No. We have a case of Blood Limb Blight in Jorrvaskr.” The Arch Mage raised his eyebrows. Such a terrible plague that he had only ever cured once. “Well one companion has contracted it and we’re, I’m requesting your aid to heal him-them.” The Arch Mage raised his eyebrows again.

“And who has contracted this plague?” Vilkas’ eyes shot down.

“Farkas.” Garik sunk back into his chair. Five years, five long years it had been without seeing his face or so much as a mention of his name. “Please-” the man’s voice was desperate-“You have to fix him, please I know-”

“I’ll leave in the morning.” Garik said quietly before standing and walking towards his quarters. He heard Faralda shooing Vilkas away and then there was silence.

Five whole years and at the mention of Farkas’ name he still felt the same heartbreak and humiliation.

He numbly climbed into bed, afraid to let himself feel the true intensity of the emotions that bubbled at the surface. He wanted to sleep; it would help him think. He knew he had to go help, it was his duty as Arch Mage but he was so unsure about having to face Farkas after all this time.

As he lay in the darkness he thought. Vilkas looked as though he hadn’t aged a day. He imagined Farkas would look the exact same as well. Probably with the same clueless expression and all.

Garik shook such thought from his mind and tried to escape them with sleep. His sleep however seemed to not want him to escape, his dreams choosing to relive the memories he had tried for five years to suppress.

Ooooo, I'm intrigued. It's too rare that an A!A has being Archmage as their DB's primary occupation. Never been big on the Companions, but I'm already liking the characterization of the DB.

Can't wait for more.

Garik rolled over wrapping his arm around Farkas. Faraks buried his face with a childlike whimper into Garik’s arm as he tried to block out the little light that had filtered into the room.

“Farkas, it’s time to wake up.” Garik whispered, “I have to leave soon.”

He heard Farkas inhale deeply before sighing. “I never thought I’d miss the beast blood, but when you’re gone I almost want it back.” Farkas said for the thousandth time.

“I know, I’ll only be gone for tonight, then I’ll be back tomorrow.” Farkas smiled and revealed his face for the first time. “But you promised you’d help me train.”

“You’re right.” Farkas moved for fluidly for someone so bulky and soon Garik found himself pinned down. “I feel this form of training would be more beneficial.” Farkas said in a husky whisper before pressing his mouth to his lovers'.

“Agreed.” Garik moaned softly as Farkas began to stroke his length that was quickly hardening.

Farkas wasted no time in turning his lover over and with fumbled preparation buried himself inside. Farkas’ hand held Garik’s hips in place as he thrust and Garik used one hand to pump himself in time with Farkas.

Just as Farkas was about to climax he sunk his teeth into Garik’s neck to muffle the sound and Garik cried out in a mixture of pain and pleasure into the pillow. While their relationship was no secret, they weren’t too big on letting everyone know what they were doing.

“I love you, Farkas.”

“I love you too, Garik, stay safe.” And with a final kiss Garik dressed and left the room to prepare for his travel.

---

Garik paced the hall of Jorrvaskr anxiously while Vilkas was sitting in a chair deep in concerned thought. Aela had not been able to last and had fallen asleep on the floor by the fire.

The Harbinger threw his hands down in frustration and Vilkas heaved a sigh. “Perhaps we should sleep, Ria said Farkas was fine when she left him.” Vilkas said

“You sleep, I’ll wait up, I just don’t understand why he isn’t back by now. It’s been over a day.” Garik chewed nervously at his thumbnail.

“You know my brother is fairly daft, sometimes he does get lost.” Vilkas walked over to the sleeping Aela and picked her up. She mumbled nonsense as she settled into Vilkas’ arms clingingly sleepily to him.

Garik stayed awake until the fire died before he finally returned to bed. Worry was running deep in his veins and drifted off into sleep.

Garik woke in the morning feeling groggy after a terrible nights sleep that seemed to be full of twisted nightmares. His room smelt of mead and pine and sweat. He melted into the warm arms around him and went to drift back to sleep but soon his mind woke up and his eyes snapped open.

Farkas was there sleeping, covered in grime and with an unfamiliar amulet around his neck. Garik cautiously lifted the chain from underneath the tunic he wore until it fell out.

An Amulet of Mara glistened at Garik and he was stunned. Shaking off that feeling he picked up the thickest book he could find and whacked Farkas with it. Farkas stirred as he begun to wake and Garik hit him again.

“Ow, good morning to you too.” Farkas grumbled and Garik only thumped him once more.

“Next time, send some word I have been worried sick. I was about to go trekking all over Skyrim trying to find your corpse.” Farkas smiled

“I missed you too.” Before the book could land another blow Garik’s arms were seized and Farkas gave him a kiss. Garik took a step back and looked down.

“Is that an amulet of Mara?” His voice was barely a whisper.

“It is.”

“For me?” He swallowed, anxious to hear the answer. He had heard the rumours of course, not that he believed them.

“No, for Aela who else do you think?” Farkas said with an infectious smile that Garik couldn’t help but catch. “So, uh…” Farkas actually sounded nervous now, “You and me?”

“You and me.” Garik replied taking the companion’s face in his hands and bringing their lips together.

Garik sat anxiously in the front pew of the Temple of Mara. The Harbinger had attracted a fairly big crowd for what was to be the happiest day of his life. He looked around at the guests who had all taken time out of their days to come.

Vilkas and Aela were sat next to Garik himself with two spaces left for Kodlak and Skjor. Behind them sat most of the companions. The other guests included friends he had made through various guild affiliations and travels. There was Sapphire, Lydia, Rune, Thongvor Silver-Blood, Ralof, Greta, Hermir, Elgrim, Ingun, Mjoll, Aerin, Shadr, Keevara and Talen-Jei, Marcurio and even Maven Black-Briar herself was there, not only that but she and Mjoll had been overly civil towards each other too.

“He’s not coming.” Garik said, panic evident in his voice. He put his head in his hands and stared at the floor.

“I hardly doubt even my brother could forget his wedding day.” Vilkas said, “Give him time, Harbinger.”

“Farkas may lack some brains but I’m sure even he’ll be suspicious when all of Jorrvaskr is empty save for Tilma.” Aela said.

Garik nervously twisted his hands. It was only three hours after dawn; there was still time… until Dusk.

---

Time passed impossibly slowly as they waited and waited for Farkas to arrive. Garik became more and more worried and soon the sun had set completely.

The priest began to pack up the temple with a sad look on his face. The guests muttered their apologies as they filtered out of the temple. Garik felt his face get hotter with each person’s sympathies and the whispers as they left the temple.

It was Farkas who wore the damn amulet yet he didn’t even show up… Garik was confused.

“I’m going home, to see if Farkas is there.” Garik announced to the other companions. They nodded and took the hint that it actually meant. “My home is open to all of you.”

Aela nodded and they all made their way towards Honeyside as Garik jogged to the cart outside the stables. He hated catching the carriage, it was for the lethargic, no warrior should catch one. Yet he wanted to be in Whiterun as soon as possible and sleep at the same time. So hence the carriage was the best way.

Garik stretched as the carriage stopped and walked far more quickly than he normally would. In the carriage he had come to two conclusions, either Farkas had changed his mind or he had been injured. Either way Garik needed to know the answer.

He pushed open the doors to Jorrvaskr and immediately made his way to the stairs. The mead hall had been used recently as there was the smell of fresh stew and mead that filled the hall.

The stench of mead only got stronger as Garik reached the living quarters and stiffened. The smell of mead was overwhelming but also another smell; the smell of sex and the sounds of pleasure that normally accompanies it.

“Probably just Ria and some whore she paid.” Garik told himself firmly, she had been known to do that from time to time.

The sounds however didn’t seem to be coming from the whelp room but rather from… the Harbinger’s room.

Garik slowly moved down the hallway and then opening his door just froze. He didn’t know how to react. So many emotions welled inside him all fighting for release, he wanted to cry, scream, kill and fus ro dah all at the same time. Unable to make his mind up on one he simply said,

“Farkas?” Even to himself the tone sounded heart breakingly shattering. Garik’s would-be-husband looked up and then continued to pound Ria, on the same bed they had shared.

“What do you want, pussy?” Farakas slurred. “What? You think I care about you? Psht, you’re just another person, how many other people can say they slept with the Dragonborn?”

“Farkas.” He didn’t stop thrusting as he spoke which made Garik feel ill.

“And to think, I left the Dragonborn at the Altar, me little Farkas. Another conquest, another achievement just as this one is.” The Dragonborn turned around leaving the room. He went outside and sat in the under forge for quite a while and didn’t leave until the shaking and sobbing had stopped… which was when Aela came and found him.

“Harbinger?” Aela sat beside the heart broken man and laid a gentle, comforting hand on his shoulder.

“No.”

“No?” Garik felt an anger swell inside him.

“I’m not the Harbinger anymore.” Aela withdrew her hand and was shocked. “I resign from my position as Harbinger and give over the position to you, Shield-Sister. The only one in the circle who has always stood by me and kept my best interest at heart, along with everyone else's.”

“Garik, I’m not sure you can do that…” Aela was confused; she didn’t want to see her friend leave.

“Well I just did, you’ll be a better Harbinger than I, if you’ll excuse me, Aela.”

As Garik packed his things he left behind anything that held a memory of Farkas. Despite the pleas from Vilkas and Aela he continued to pack until the room was oddly the same. It missed the character Garik had brought, but still looked occupied.

“Where are you going, at least tell us that?” Aela pleaded, just as he was about to leave.

“Somewhere with lots of spiders.” Garik remarked. “Long life to you Harbinger, Companion.”

When Garik woke the morning chill seemed far colder than usual. Pulling on the thickest enchanted robe he could find he began to pack for his first trip to Whiterun in almost five years.

He actually had to think for a moment to remember what the weather would be like at this time of year. He smiled sadly at how long it had been since he had been there. His house in the hold had been long since sold and Jon Battle-Born and Olfina Grey-Mane, nay Battle-Born had since moved in. Lydia had moved to the college for some time, then left to go adventuring on her own but was now a studying student of the arcane arts.

He made sure to pack everything he could possibly need for healing and everything that he knew would be needed for the cure. After an unusually slow pack Garik left his quarters and headed to the library to get the book he had referenced the last time he cured Blood Limb Blight.

He reached the courtyard and Vilkas was waiting at the gate leaning against the wall, with a pack at his feet and Faralda with a pack of her own was standing, arms crossed, beside him.

“Tolfdir is in charge until I return, you should stay.”

“Believe me Arch Mage, we’d all feel more comfortable if one of us went with you, we all remember what happened the last time you went questing alone.” Faralda said.

“Faralda, I’m not suggesting you stay I’m telling you as Arch Mage to stay. I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.” Garik snapped, Faralda a bit taken back by the sudden and uncommon outburst nodded before retreating to her place, guarding the bridge.

“Thank you, Gar-”

“I don’t need your thanks for doing my job.” Garik said simply before pulling his hood on as he began to walk.

The walk was eerily quiet with the only sounds being the wind and sometimes the odd dragon far off in the distance. Five years ago if Garik were in this situation he would have gone out of his way to hunt down those Dragons, whether it be with Vilkas or Farkas or Aela.

“I never picked you to become Arch Mage, hell I never even pictured you learning to throw a fireball.” Vilkas said in an attempt to make some conversation.

“I’ve changed a lot, Vilkas.” Garik said simply.

“I can see, well Aela will be glad to see you. Did you know your old home is the new home of the new Battle-Borns?”

“Yes, in fact I did. Jon Battle-Born wrote to me after I sold it to him for half the price it’s worth.” Vilkas raised an eyebrow

“So that part is true.”

“Making people happy and helping those in need is what I do, Vilkas, remember that.” The conversation died as Garik noticed his defences rising as the snow thinned.

Garik stepped inside Jorrvaskr and immediately felt uneasy. Uncomfortable in the familiar, yet totally alien environment he found himself in, the Companions were all seated for their supper and shifted awkwardly in their seats when Garik entered.

Ria had long since left the companions; Aela telling her to leave once she neglected three contracts in a row. From the whispers Garik had heard she was now in Riften working in the Bunkhouse…

There were some unfamiliar whelps and from the monthly letters he received from Aela he knew that Njada was now apart of the circle and that Athis had died two years ago in battle.

The whelps seemed to sense the tension in the room but were unsure why it had occurred. Aela rose from the table and advanced towards Garik.

“Arch Mage, it’s an honour to see you have come to our aid.” Garik nodded and Aela led him down the stairs and through the corridor of living quarters. The decoration scheme had changed since he was last there, which was no surprise.

Aela led Garik down the halls to the same room Farkas had occupied five years ago. He didn’t know what to expect when he opened the door but he did no expect everything to be the exact same as it always had been.

Everything about the place he had called home once had changed, except for this one room. Perhaps it just meant Farkas hadn’t changed, the same old idiot who broke the Dragonborn’s heart all those years ago.

Aela left the Arch Mage and the unconscious companion alone and Garik felt a swell of emotions as he laid eyes on the man he had loved so, so much. He wasn’t sure how he felt when he saw Farkas laying the bed. He was horrified such a disease had stuck his former lover but a small part of him was…glad and that part made him feel horrible.

Farkas’ usually sun kissed skin was a sickly white, dark purple lined his eyes, his hair was as wild as ever, along his arms were the classic dark red and purple splotches that were the tell tale signs of the disease. His temperature ran a lot colder than normal, which if not for the Nordic blood, would have killed him long before Garik even arrived. Aside from the illness Farkas looked as though he had barely changed.

Even his muscles looked to be the same size, despite the fact that the blight was famous for eating away at muscle, and causing bleeding within the limbs of course.

Garik silently set up all his supplies careful not to wake Farkas for a number of reasons. He had previously thought that if he was ever in a room with his former lover that they might have some big conflict, or they might get back together but now all he wanted to do was run. He wanted to leave the room and runaway, what he was afraid of he did not know but he did know he wanted to be far away from here.

Garik opened his book and began to read as he ground up a giant’s toe. He made notes every so often on a spare bit of parchment. He added some vampire dust slowly and as the powers began to mix he added some cure poison potion to bind it all together.

Garik must have sat there for a good six hours before his first potion was ready. After hours of grinding up giant’s toes, mountain flowers, vampire dust, bear claws, hawk feathers and numerous other ingredients Garik finally combined it all with a cure poison potion and a draught of health then after letting it boil for half an hour and giving it time to cool the paste was ready.

Garik uneasily poured the thick black creamy substance onto Farkas’s skin and the lightly spread it around the red patches rubbing it in. Farkas did not stir and Garik was thankful for that. He finished rubbing the black cream into his legs but when he started on the arms Farkas began to stir slightly.

Garik worked quickly, quietly and lightly afraid of what would happen if he woke Farkas right now. The black cream was beginning to harden and would soon chip away lightly after being fully.

Garik capped the bottle and turned away looking for some Juniper berries.

“Huh?” Farkas’s voice made Garik freeze momentarily. He looked over and noticed Farkas staring at his black hands.

“It needs time to set, don’t touch it.” Garik said simply and quickly before returning to his alchemy supplies.

“Garik?” Farkas questioned, Garik thought he heard hope in his voice but realised he must have been mistaken.

“Sleep, companion, it’s needed.”

“I think we’re beyond those formalities.” Farkas said

“I disagree, sleep.” Garik’s heart was racing. His shaking hands found the Juniper berries and he began ate one and began to mash another. He could feel Farkas’ eyes watching him, almost felt them burning in his back.

“Did you get any of my letters?”

“Yes.”

“Did you read them?”

“Yes.” There was silence after that and eventually Farkas drifted off to sleep allowing Garik to work in peace. The letters he received from Farkas were all the same. He begged for forgiveness, professed his love and claimed he had no recollection of the night blaming the mead for his actions. Yet in Garik’s experience mead rarely made you do things you didn’t want to do, it just opened you up to all the things you were too afraid to do.

Garik would have to wake Farkas again soon. Then he would get the pleasure of spoon-feeding the fallen companion gallons and gallons of a potion that had to be ingested with either mead or water. Garik would give Farkas water.

He ground up the large amount of potion he needed and began to infuse it with water. The foul smell hung in the air but Garik simply kept mixing and mixing until there were bowls and bowls lined up of the soupy potion.

Eight bowls were lined up and then Garik nudged Farkas to wake him. The companion stirred and when he opened his eyes he pulled back slightly.

The final bowl was placed on the table and the entire potion had been taken. Garik turned his attention to the black clay that was now fully set. He began to pick at it feeling Farkas’ eyes trained on him.

“I’m sorry you know.” Farkas broke the silence.

“I know, you wrote it in your letters.”

“No about that, well yes about that but I’m sorry for the way I treated you. You were the first good thing to happen to me in a long time and I never treated you with respect.” Garik felt his cheeks go hot but said nothing. “Even when we were together and I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my days with you I still couldn’t comprehend how you felt. I never gave you a shred of respect that was good enough, not even when you were announced Harbinger and for that I’m sorry.”

“Farkas, I’m sure I didn’t deserve any more respect than you gave.”

“That’s simply not true!” Farkas sat up a little straighter and Garik shielded his face a little more, certain his face was glowing like a lamp. He had almost finished removing one arm of the hardened potion, already the skin was returning to it’s normal tanned state. “You always did that, thought you were much lower than you really were. You constantly brought yourself down and it was because of me. You brought yourself down to the level I treated you, but you were always much more than that.”

“Farkas, really I don’t deser-”

“But Garik you do. You’re a beacon of hope not just to me but all of Skyrim. You’ve faced impossible evils and lived, I never saw just how important you were until after you had gone-”

“Farkas.”

“I was a gods damned fool to-”

“Farkas.”

“-have ever let you go, I was a coward-”

“Farkas.”

“-to not give you a proper-”

“Farkas.”

“-apology, a proper explanation-”

“Farkas.”

“-instead of hiding behind mead even-”

“FARKAS!” The voice rang is Farkas’ ears and the room trembled slightly. Potion bottles rattled and were the only sound Farkas could hear. It was as if the whole world had gone silent at Garik’s yell. Farkas blinked a few times, in all the years he had known Garik, Garik had never once raised his voice like that. Farkas had heard him shout plenty of times but never heard him raise his voice outside of battle. What had he done to him? “For the love of Talos, shut up.”

Farkas was still stunned. Garik stood abruptly “If you’ll excuse me.”

Garik left the room and avoided the stares from the whelps. He walked up the stairs and found Aela and Vilkas in deep discussion. “Garik, how goes the healing?” Aela said

“Good, he should be fully recovered by morning and I can head back to the college by midday. I came up to see if I was able to help myself to a meal.”

“Please go right ahead, everything is open to you.” Aela said with a kind smile. Vilkas and her shared and few glances and once Garik was settled Aela nudged Vilkas.

“Uh, Garik?”

“Yes, Vilkas?”

“We were wondering what happened just now, we swear we heard the Thu’um…”

“Oh uh… I lost my temper and yelled is all. Sometimes if I raise my voice it feels like a shout but it’s not really.”

Vilkas nodded and left Garik to eating. He turned to Aela and mouthed with an expression of disbelief “Lost his temper?”

"Raise his voice?" She mouthed back with the same expression of disbelief.

Down in his room Farkas stared blankly at a wall. He had rehearsed that confession over and over in his mind. Each time he anticipated a different reaction from Garik. Yet never, ever had he imagined Garik to yell like that.

Not the peaceful, calm, mellow Garik he had known and loved. Even now Farkas found himself still in love with the man sat before him. He had wanted to tell him that, but Garik didn’t want Farkas to talk it seemed.

He had to tell him. He had to not only tell Garik that he loved him but also had to tell him what had really occurred that night. There was a knock on the door and Vilkas entered.

“Brother.” Faraks said slightly surprised.

“The Arch Mage says you’ll be fully recovered by morning.” Vilkas picked up a flower from the table examined it and then placed it back down. “So tomorrow afternoon he’ll be heading back to the college.”

“And?”

“Farkas, listen to me. If he goes back to that college you’ll never get another opportunity like this again.”

“You believe I don’t know that?”

“I believe you’re afraid about revealing the truth, there is a reason you have not even told me and if you can’t tell Garik then you don’t deserve him.”

Vilkas sat on the side of the bed and looked at his brother. “It’s not that simple…”

“Whatever it is, Garik will understand. But whatever he does is his choice and you cannot stop that, but you have to try.” Vilkas got up and left the room.

Farkas knew his brother was right, he always seemed to be right, about everything. He continued to mull over thoughts until Garik himself walked him. Garik was looking tired and worn but Farkas couldn’t help but think he looked beautiful.

He silently resumed picking away at the black clay on his arms and Farkas watched him “Garik, I know you don’t want me to speak but…”

“Yes?” He grumbled

“Garik, I love you and I’ll love you until the divines take us.” Garik didn’t move a muscle. “I owe you an answer and I’ll give you the honest truth of what happened on the night of our wedding, but I don’t want your sympathies I just want you to know.”

Garik didn’t move, he stiffened his shoulders and continued to pick at the clay but in larger, quicker chunks.

“I came back to Jorrvaskr to collect the present I got you. I got here and saw Ria and one of her friends having some mead. I started to talk to her and ask her if she was coming to the wedding. She told me the wedding would be a joke. Why would anyone want to marry me? I don’t have any book smarts, I’m only good with violence. She got inside my head, telling me that the real mystery was why the great Dragonborn, the Harbinger of the Companions, Thane of seven holds would ever want to marry a half brainer like me. I obsessed over the idea and as I drank mead my mind twisted. I was sure you were doing this as some sort of ploy to watch me burn, so for a time I hated you. Yet, once the mead more off I saw how much of an idiot I was. I’m sorry for ever doubting you.”

“I-it’s okay.” Garik said, his voice but a whisper. He refused to turn his face to look at Farkas. He wouldn’t let himself give in now, no not now, not ever. Farkas was surprisingly silent after that and part of Garik was disappointed. He wanted to hear Farkas’ voice even though he knew it would be his undoing.

Farkas watched Garik work carefully. His movements seemed rushed, shaking and nowhere near as confident as they were before.

“When will I be better?” Farkas wanted to hear Garik’s voice again, perhaps for one of the last times.

“Tomorrow morning.” His voice wavered, betrayed him. Farkas knew what Garik was like and knew that he would pick pride above all else. Farkas, while his heart shattered at the thought of this being the last time to see Garik, he had also accepted that Garik had made his choice and Farkas had done all he could.

“And you’ll be leaving when?”

“In the evening. I have to make sure you stay healthy and don’t slip back into the illness.” Garik’s voice wavered again and his hands began to shake much more visibly. After a moment he pulled them back “Water…” he mumbled mostly to himself before leaving the room.

Garik took a few deep breaths once outside the room in a poor attempt to calm himself down. Maybe he should just Farkas, confess the feelings he had pent up for so long. The feelings he had never told anyone but had just buried under books and study of the arcane arts. Feelings that remained dormant but had rushed back all at once, feelings that had caused him to raise his voice outside of battle. He went to found a pitcher of water and a goblet and returned to the room.

He sat down and poured himself a glass before taking careful sips. The water seemed to calm him and make him thing more clearly. It only made sense to tell Farkas everything…
But the right moment was passing and quickly. He resumed removing the blackened clay then after a short while his voice seemed to act of it’s own accord.

“You have no idea how you made me feel.” He whispered, just loud enough for Farkas to hear and just soft enough for the heartbreak to be retained in his voice “I was humiliated, heartbroken and angry. I was contempt with being angry at you, I could live with that. Then you started sending letters every other day to the college, you begged for forgiveness and I could never shake the image of you and Ria in the bed we had shared for so many nights. I thought I could forgive you but something would always stop me and soon I was left in emotional turmoil.”

Farkas listened intently, Garik had just about freed his second hand from the clay and continued to work as he spoke. “I hated you, I loved you, I wanted to watch you burn, I wanted to accept your apology… I was a mess. So I buried myself with work and other commitments to avoid being alone more than anything. Yet these past five years have been the loneliest years of my life. Do you have any idea what it’s like to be constantly surrounded by people and yet still feel completely alone?”

“No.”

“And I hope you never have to, it’s a horrible feeling, one that may haunt me for the rest of my days. But what I always felt, regardless of how busy I made myself you were always there, pulling at my heart’s strings. It seemed as that everything you did was just to toy with my heart and leave it aching all the more.”

The confession was haunting in a way. In the five years they had been apart Farkas had never truly thought about how Garik would have felt. He was too concerned with how guilty and horrible he felt himself. He always just assumed Garik would have been angry… never giving Garik any depth.

The clay had all been picked away and then Garik stood wiping his eyes quickly with the sleave of his robes. “I’m done here.”

Farkas understood the double meaning behind the words and waited silently as Garik hastily collected his things and then left. As soon as Farkas heard the doors close he swung his legs off the bed and attempted to stand. He felt shaky on his legs and had to lean heavily on everything, but he had a plan.

---

Garik woke in the morning and shifted in the saddest excuse for a mattress the Bannered Mare had to offer. He groaned and sat up, hearing sickening but satisfying cracks and pops in his neck and back as he stretched.

He crawled out of the cold bed and pulled on his robes. He felt emotionally drained and just wanted to get back to the college away from all the drama that Whiterun brought.

He could at least walk around town for the day, see his old friends, maybe he could see how his old house was holding up. He would need some more ingredients and potions too so he would have to see if someone was selling any.

He would have to pay a visit to the court wizard, who was technically a college representative. He would also have to see how Adrianne was going at the Warmaiden’s and their son.

As he left his room he hoped that he would see Braith, she would be in her teens by now. He ate a small breakfast at the inn and again wished he was back home. The cooks in the college had the aid of magic and were more skilled.

He finished his meal and left the inn.

It was a stereotypical Whiterun day, the market was buzzing with activity and although the sun was beaming down there was a slight chill in the air, although it was not unpleasant. It was almost midday, a sleeping habit Garik had picked up from life at the college. It was far too cold in the mornings and the sun actually didn’t appear till quite late in the day.

He about to head over to Carlotta’s stall when one of the companion’s whelps came rushing up to him.

“Arch Mage, the Companions would like to extend an invitation to a celebratory feast at Jorrvaskr in your honour.” The whelp handed him a letter.

Aela, her rounded script easily distinguishable from the other’s scratchy handwriting, wrote the letter. Garik mused over it for a bit and then eventually accepted. He sent word of his acceptance with the whelp and continued about his day.

---

The time of the feast was approaching and Garik thought it would be appropriate to change into some more formal robes. He returned to his room and changed into his Arch Mage robes.

He soon left the inn taking all his belongings with him. He walked towards the legendary mead hall that he had once called his home.

When he stepped into Jorrvaskr it was typical feast fashion there was food, mead and decorations covering every table and corner of the hall. What was untypical of the situation was the lack of life in the hall and how there was almost no noise.

Aela rose from her position on the table. “Apologies Arch Mage Garik.” She said walking over to greet him “The rest of the companions have all gone to a Silver Hand camp that may be the largest one we’ve encountered yet.”

“Best of luck to them then.”

“Farkas wanted to run off, but I’ve made him stay. He may still be ill and he has to thank you most of all.”

“Aye.” Garik sat down and looked around the table. Even though most of the companions were missing there was still enough food to feed all of Whiterun, twice. He looked around the table, unable to decide what to have first.

“Oh, I had this made especially for you, Grilled Chicken Breast.”

“You remember by favourite dish.” Garik said with a smile. Aela nodded and handed him the plate. Farkas came out of the kitchens looking nervous. Garik didn’t notice him and he waited awkwardly for a confirmation nod from Aela before approaching.

He sat down next to Garik who didn’t seem to object and the three settled into an easy conversation.

The conversation was enjoyable and Garik didn’t feel awkward at all sitting so close to Farkas. They were simply three friends that were laughing and joking about everything that had happened. Garik remembered why he became a companion in the first place, for friendships like these and as much as he hated to think of it, he was reminded why he had fallen for Farkas.

“If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be back soon.” Aela said giving Farkas a wink as she walked down into the quarters.

“I want to hear the story of how you became Arch Mage, I never imagined you as a mage.” Farkas said with a kind smile. Garik launched into the story so readily, easily talking to his former lover.

“And that’s basically everything had happened.” Garik concluded with a shrug taking a sip of mead.

“Amazing.” Farkas said, the tale had been far more engaging than he originally believed it would be. He thought all mages sat behind library books and occasional defiled a Nordic tomb or two.

“So did you, uh… look for someone in the last five years?” Garik almost choked on his mead.

“N-No.” He spluttered out, between coughs. He finished coughing and then looked at Farkas. “Di-Did you?”

Farkas arched an eyebrow, “No, there was no point.”

“No point.”

“Why try and found what I already have?”

“Huh?”

“Garik, I love you still.” Garik felt his chest tighten and heat rush to his face and other parts of his body. Maybe it was the mead but his guard was dropped enough to feel joy in the words.

Farkas saw the corner of Garik’s mouth twitch and he took in a breath. Garik had actually been listening to him and didn’t appear to be about to shut him out completely.

Then his face turned serious and his mouth was drawn in a thin line. He calmly sipped his mead and Farkas was crushed.

Garik couldn’t bring himself to fall for Farkas again. He had been fooled by that face in the past and wouldn’t do it so easily again. Especially not while a major part of him wouldn’t be able to trust him. He just seemed so unchanged, so set in his old ways; as if five years hadn’t passed at all for Farkas and he was the exact same.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t.” Garik stood, “Thank your Harbinger for the feast, it was most enjoyable.”

When the doors of Jorrvaskr closed Farkas sighed, “Oh well, plan two.”

Whoops the part above is supposed to be Abandoned 13/?, my bad.

Garik loaded his sack onto the wagon with a thump that made the driver jump. “We’ll be leaving in five minutes, we’re just waiting on one more.” The driver said, so Garik nodded and sat down with a huff.

He was angry, annoyed and frustrated at everything now. He knew there was no real reason to be angry. He wanted to accept everything that Farkas had said and gotten back together with him but that was something he couldn’t allow himself to do.

A man so unchanged by everything that had happened surely had learned no lesson and would act in the exact same way. So Garik was just saving himself from the heartache that would undoubtedly be caused. Besides, he was Arch Mage now and Farkas hated Magic like vampires hate sunlight. So that would have been another pressure on any relationship they would have had.

Garik was beating himself up about the whole thing and he knew it. He was more angry at himself for rejecting Farkas even though he knew, or at least thought he had done the right thing.

Yet in all the years apart Garik never even thought to look for another. He had accepted the Farkas would be the one until his dying days even if they weren’t together.

Yet now, even thought Farkas’ confession echoed in his mind he pulled up the long suppressed memories of the day he caught him. Instead of stifling the anger he just became more and more angry and pulled his hood up, pulling it on so that no one could see his face.

He felt the wagon shift as the weight of a third person was added. “Bout bloody time.” Garik muttered to himself. All he wanted to do was go back to the familiar walls of the college and forget about everything that had happened in the past few days.

He shifted in his seat; positioning his sack at his feet and crossed his arms, he tucked his chin into his chest, in preparation to rest once they began to move.

“Touch my pack and I’ll cut your hands off and feed them to you.” Garik snapped as he closed his eyes.

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” Garik’s eyes flew open again and he looked towards the other passenger. Farkas.

“Farkas, what are you doing?” Garik practically hissed.

“I’m going to join the college of Winterhold.” Garik was shocked and blinked a few times.

“What?”

“Well I may never be as good as you but knowing some magic can’t be that bad right?”

“But you hate magic, that’s-” Garik stopped himself. One of the reasons for joining the college was because of Farkas’ hatred of magic.

“I know, but it can’t be all bad and what’s the difference between a fireball and an enchanted bow that fires arrows that explode on impact? Not a whole lot, so I thought I’d try my hand at the whole magic thing.”

Garik was stunned, “Besides Aela gave me time off and she thinks having a circle member that’s a battle mage will be a good thing and hopefully boost recruitment.” Garik got over the initial shock and the anger set back in.

“Well, the college doesn’t just accept anyone you know? You need to already have some degree of skill. I don’t want to have my college being treated as some sort of joke.” Garik snapped.

“Well I have been learning for a while now…” Farkas said, the confidence in his voice was lost. “Farengar says I’m a natural, but I’m sure he’s just glad he has someone to talk to…”

“Do you even know any spells?” Garik snapped.

“I do!” Farkas’ excitement perked up – Not the reaction Garik was looking for. “Well I know some basic destruction spells and a few conjuration. Conjuration is defiantly my favourite school of magic.”

“Mines Alteration…” Garik said, raising an eyebrow at the Nord in front of him, a Nord that he felt he didn’t know at all.

“Really? I pegged you more for Illusion or Restoration. Conjuration is just so… fascinating, have you studied it?”

“A little…”

“I’ve read just about every book I could find on conjuration I swear. I was hoping there would be a proper teacher at the college, Farengar’s knowledge is quite limited, more than mine actually.”

“How long have you been studying the arcane arts?”

“Oh, about two years I think. I was actually on my way to the college when I contracted Blood Limb Blight…”

“Really?”

“Well yes.”

“When you get to the college you have to pass Faralda, Faralda only lets the best through. You need a little more than a base knowledge to enter the college.”

“Well I figured all I could do was try and if it wasn’t enough then I’d study some more and come back. But I have been practicing, it’s not that great but I try.”

“Show me.” Garik said narrowing his eyes. Farkas talked about magic with such… enthusiasm and Garik wasn’t sure if it was genuine or some sort of play.

“Show you what?” Farkas was confused, it seemed while he had broadened his knowledge of the arcane he remained as daft as ever.

“A spell, what else?” Garik snapped.

“I’ll show you my best spell, it’s not that great but I am working on making it stronger.” A dark purple ball formed in Farkas’ hand and he was concentrating very hard. He threw the ball to the ground nearby and a stunning flame atronach appeared from the dark purple energy ball.

---
I imagine Farkas as a conjuration man myself, I don't know why I just do.

Garik was stunned.

“I’ll admit that studying conjuration isn’t my only reason for wanting to join the college.” Farkas looked down at his hands, Garik was still looking at the flame atronach. It was quite weak compared to what Phinis could cast but stronger than most, Garik was impressed, fascinated and he found his heart yearning for Farkas even more. His head attempted to suppressed his hearts feelings.

Garik was gaining new respect and adoration for Farkas. Garik thought that Farkas was the one companion that hadn’t changed at all when in fact he had changed the most of all. There was a long moment of silence and then the atronach disappeared.

“You know, when I first began to study magic I did it in an attempt to win you back… I never realised it would be so, amazing.” Farkas played with his hands, suddenly self-conscious revealing a part of himself to a man far more superior in rank and skill. Garik sighed and couldn’t help but smile.

Farkas had changed one of his very core beliefs in an attempt to get Garik to love him and Garik loved him all the more for it.

“Farkas, it would be a lie if I told you I ever stopped loving you…” Garik said. Farkas looked up and blinked.

“Truly?”

“Yes, I’ve loved you every day we were apart. Through all the anger I still loved you.” A smile found it’s way on Farkas’ face “But you broke my heart and I still don’t fully trust you.” Farkas’ smile dropped and he mentally prepared himself for another rejection. “However, I’m willing to give you one more chance.”

“What?” Farkas said looking up with wide eyes. Even though he said he was unsure his eyes were sparkling with joy.

“You have one chance because I love you, Farkas. But if you break my heart again, I will move on.” Farkas nodded and his smile returned. “But for now, I’ll work on rebuilding my trust in you and you work on your magic.” Garik leant forward and pulled Farkas forward into a quick kiss.

“But just because the Arch Mage is in love with you won’t get you off easy in the college.”

“Good.” Farkas said with a devilish smile before pulling Garik into another kiss. A kiss that unleashed five years worth of pent up passion.
