Summerset Surprise 7/9

Niruin was so shocked for a moment he didn't have a thought in his head, and so for a moment he had nothing to say. The new thief kept talking though. "and, well, I thought-"
"You thought what?" Panic rising. "Why is he here? What has he said?"
"Oh the usual. Never should have come here, just a scratch, etc. Didn't really stop to chat, you know? Anyway, Sapphire said-"
"What, Sapphire? What did she say?" The new thief looked puzzled.
"She said I should bring you one of them. Thought it might cheer you up. Well, we figured they must have roughed you up pretty bad, and you haven't really took it well, and a bit of vengeance can do you a world of good, so my dad always said anyway. So I thought, what's the harm? If you don't want him, I'll just kill him and dump the body in the-"
"Wait, he's still alive?"
"Oh yeah. That's the point, really. So, shall I leave this with you?"
Niruin examined the Nord's face, looking for signs of mockery, pity, anything that would indicate he had the faintest idea what he was actually talking about. Apparently not. He was offering him his...this...this with the same nonchalance one would offer a drink to someone who'd lost too much money on a wager. Niruin was too shocked to feel relief, he just nodded as his brain processed what was happening.
"Great! Well, here's the rope." The new thief pressed the end of the rope tied to Linwe into Niruin's hand, then walked off, with the happiness that doing a good deed gives in his stride.
Well now.
Well.
Niruin stared at the unconscious form before him for a long time. Then, suddenly, he dragged Linwe over to the training room, and shoved him into the chest with the strongest lock. Turning around, he noticed Rune over by one of the other chest, looking at him, surprised.
"I need to get some things. Don't let him out."
Rune nodded, tapped his nose, and gave a wry smile. Niruin strode out- he had some shopping to do.

Upon Niruin's return, muffled noises were coming from the chest. Linwe was awake.

The others were gathered around the cistern, getting on with their business and avoiding the training room, the general consensus being that a man's vengeance was his own business. The loud, sharp sounding thuds and the screams were expected, and drew little attention. The delicious smell that drifted out of the training room was not expected, however.
Most of them were unaware of the rumours about Bosmer. Those that had heard stories, however, started thinking. Cynric looked at Brynjolf, a disbelieving look on his face.
"He isn't?"
"No, surely..." They looked at each other a moment, both wearing identical expressions of doubt and curiosity. Rune looked over at them.
"He isn't what?"
With a mixture of puzzlement and uncertainty, they walked over to the training room. The others followed.
When they realised what was happening, Sapphire burst out laughing, Rune retched a little, and everyone else had a reaction in between. There was a moment while everyone processed what they were witnessing.
Most of Linwe was on the floor. Blood covered his mouth and most of his clothes; some parts of him were conspicuously absent. Niruin was stood next to a small fire, above which hung a cooking pot he must have fetched in for the purpose. He was stirring what appeared to be a meat stew, the specific contents of which were indicated by the diced lumps of meat at the end of a golden arm which was next to the pot. A pile of someone's best silver bowls was on the other side of it. As Niruin looked at the group, he smiled, and seemed to be actually cheerful.
"Ah, there you are. I've got three days to eat all this, so if anyone wants some, let me know."
Brynjolf was the first to regain his composure.
"Lad, what in Oblivion are you doing?"
Niruin feigned a hurt expression, then drew back his shoulders.
"It's a tradition. This-" He gestured at the pot, and at Linwe "is the way of my people. I'd ask you to respect that."
"Lad, no, this won't-" Suddenly, a groan, a strangely distorted keening whimper of despair, escaped from the mound on the floor. Everyone except Niruin froze. "Is he-still alive?"
"Not for much longer. I'm trying to keep the meat as fresh as possible. But for all intents and purposes, no, he isn't. Now, I've already eaten the tongue, which is a delicacy, you know, but there's plenty more to go around if you're interested."
Everyone stood where they were, shocked. Even Brynjolf didn't seem to have anything to say. Suddenly, the voice of their leader pierced the air around the group.
"What are you al stood around here for? Things aren't going to steal themselves you know!" Mercer stopped as he saw what Niruin was doing. Frowning, he spoke. "I thought you lot only had to do that in Valenwood?"
Niruin shrugged. "Sometimes, a bit of tradition does the soul good."
"Oh." Mercer turned to the others. "Well, I hope you all won't be stood around all day, there are things to do. Brynjolf, I need a word." He jerked his head to imply Brynjolf should follow, and strode off. Brynjolf walked after him, protesting.
"Mercer, surely you can't let him-"
"What have I always told you? Elves are fucking weird. It's just how they are. Anyway-"

Their words became indecipherable as they moved further away from the group. Niruin seemed completely oblivious to the controversy his actions had generated, and was tasting the stew. He then added some honey. The new thief sighed.
"Well, I wasn't expecting this when I brought him back for you, but nevermind. Enjoy your meal." With that he walked off. Niruin called after him.
"If you ever need marksmanship training, let me know!" Then he turned his attention back to the pot.
Cynric chose that moment to leave, and Vipir left with him, shaking his head, muttering vaguely to himself.
Rune cleared his throat.
"Umm, Niruin, I know it's none of my business, but...how long are you planning on keeping him like that?" He inclined his head at the dismembered, barely conscious but still suffering Altmer on the floor.
"Oh, he'll bleed out soon enough." A dark look flitted across Niruin's face. "A shame it has to be so quick really, but I did my best."
"Right. Alright then. Good. Um. Yes." With that, Rune left, and the only one still stood there was Sapphire. She was grinning.
Niruin looked her right in the eye. He suspected she knew, somehow, what the others did not, and looked for signs to confirm or deny this. His thoughts must have shown in his expression, because she grew serious suddenly. Crossing her arms, she looked down at the Altmer, and sighed thoughtfully. When she looked back at Niruin, he thought she was going to say something, but she didn't. Instead, she walked further into the room, and looked around furtively. Then she spoke.
"Look-" She paused, seemed to be thinking, and looked away. "I had..let's say, a bad time, with some Bandits once. I killed them. But this-" She gestured at the pot and the Altmer, looked Niruin in the eyes, and smiled again. "This is just great."
Niruin gave a small smile back, then looked back at the pot. "Well, this one's done." He reached for a bowl, and spooned the stew into it, before handing it towards Sapphire. "Would you like some?" Linwe gave another pitiful sound from the floor. Niruin turned and snapped "Oh shut up!" Then he looked back at Sapphire. "My cooking is quite good you know."
Sapphire seemed reluctant, but curious. She pursed her lips for a moment before speaking. "Frankly, I don't think cannibalism's my thing. Thanks, though. I'm sure your cooking's fine, it's just- well, I just-"
Niruin held up a hand. "No, that's fine, I don't take it personally. I know...other people...can be a bit..find it a bit off putting. No offense taken." He reached for a fork and started tucking into the stew.
She looked relieved. "Good. Well then-" she turned to leave, her eyes straying over Linwe, then turning back to Niruin. "Did you say you only had three days to eat him?"
"Well, three days after he dies. Technically. I'm getting a head start."
"Right. Well, let me know how it goes." With a nod, she turned to leave. Niruin took his bowl and sat on a chest near where Linwe was bleeding to death from his wounds and drifting in and out of shock. He was surprised at how content he felt. Everything really had gone better than he could have expected. As far as he could tell, no-one suspected what had been done to him by the Altmer dying on the floor; well, except for Sapphire, and he believed that would be alright as well. As he ate the soup, the smell and taste took him back to his childhood, of meals prepared after battles by his parents, and great family gatherings to finish off the dead in the required time. Soothed by home comforts, he looked down at Linwe again. So, he hadn't strictly stuck to the requirements- people were supposed to be dead when you started eating them, so he was cheating a bit. Also, he was supposed to eat all of his fallen enemy, so castrating Linwe and then feeding his own member to him was probably cheating too. But then, he thought, it was the thought that counted, he wasn't under a religious requirement here, and he had got what he wanted.
He felt like himself again.
As a death rattle formed in Linwe's throat, and the Altmer began to breath his last, Niruin started to laugh.
