I think if Kodlak died now Vilkas wouldn't really blame Gunnar for too long. I imagine he would at first but because Gunnar did all he could and confessed to his mistake I think Vilkas would be more forgiving, though I imagine it taking time.
I think there's basically two choices;
the steady course where Kodlak lives and Gunnar and Vilkas have no more hardship
or the rocky course where Kodlak dies, Gunnar and Vilkas are pushed to their ends strengthening their relationship when they do come together.
