Not really what you asked for, but hell, I never was a big Tomb Raider fan.

Legacy

Jessica Wolfir walked along the small forest path towards one of the most important sites in Skyrim history. In her opinion, anyway. Others would disagree, and had over the centuries. But it was certainly up there, anyway.

And the path towards it was a small, sandy track through a dense forest.

It wasn't right. But it was also the only thing that fit. It wouldn't be right to have it in a big concrete city.

Besides, it was a good way for a walk through the woods. The sky was blue, the sun was shining, there was a cool breeze, the birds were singing and she was being followed.

Not an animal, she could sense that much, but beyond that she didn't know what it was. Or maybe who. It didn't want to make its presence known in any case so Jessica was happy to pretend she hadn't noticed its presence.

Eventually, the trees and undergrowth cleared and there it was, sitting in the centre of a surprisingly well-maintained grove.

The tomb.

It wasn't much. A grassy hill with a big stone slab set in it covered in ancient writing and on top of it the statue of her. A tall, proud Nord, right hand held high, one foot on the skull of a dragon.

Once, the woman had held a sword and worn clothes. But the metal had long ago rusted away and the cloth had rotted. Now she stood naked and empty-handed.

Jessica strolled up to the burial mound and read the slab. Or tried to. The letters were ancient and the spelling archaic. She'd never been much good at languages anyway, and ancient languages even less so. She made the effort anyway.

"Here lies... Eirikr Wolf-Blooded, I assume. Lover of... L? El? Ael? Someone, anyway. Mother of... no, Mother to... a whole bunch of children. Something of Solitude. High Something-or-other of Skyrim. Slayer of Dragons. Defender of the... Empire. Conqueror of Alt... Altmeri? Dragonborn."

Jessica stood back. That was it. That was the epitaph of the greatest, most important, most controversial woman Skyrim had ever seen. And it didn't even mention her actual legacy. Oh, sure, the history books always devoted a few paragraphs to the dragons and the elves and that... what was it? Peasant uprising? Something like that. But all those things had only ever been framed as the chaos that ultimately led to her ascension and the long, bloody history that followed.

But the people who'd built this monument hadn't known about what she'd set in motion, what would come after her. Dragons and peasants had been a lot more worthy of mention to them, because they'd been a lot more immediate. They'd probably thought 'Wolf-Blooded' had been one of those pretty last names that had been all the rage back then.

Jessica walked around the hill, not expecting to find anything but still feeling disappointed when she didn't find anything. She'd heard the stories, of course. That the tomb of Wolf-Blooded was this giant underground complex full of traps and undead and unholy shrines. Although, Jessica considered, these days, any shrine likely to be found in the tomb of Eirikr would probably be considered a rather ordinary one.

And vast treasures, of course. Heaps of gold and silver and gems and whatnot. Books of ancient sorceries, artifacts crafted by the gods.

But if there was something underneath that hill, there was no sign of an entrance. Nothing short of an excavation would unearth the tomb's secrets and there wasn't anyone in the world who'd dare desecrate this grave.

Besides, Jessica rather doubted all those stories. The only thing she expected to find in the tomb was Eirikr and her lover, resting in peace. Nothing more.

Jessica stepped back, turned to leave and stopped abruptly when she came face to face with the one who'd followed her.

"Who are you?"

Jessica shrugged. "Just a visitor," she growled.

The large black wolf blinked in surprise. "You speak?"

"You'd be surprised how many people do these days. You the guardian of this place?"

The wolf stared at her. "It doesn't need guarding. I am... an echo. A remnant. A messenger."

"Who from?"

"The one lying here."

"Figures," Jessica said. "So what's the message?"

"I bring her messages, not you."

Jessica grinned. "Really? So... I could tell you something, then you'd tell her?"

"Yes."

"Hmm. Well... I guess... I assume she adopted a whole lot of children? And that most of those children would later rise to become the heads of Skyrim's new noble houses?"

"Of course," said the wolf.

"Of course. It's in the history books. But there's a story... more of a fairytale, really. That even though she adopted all those children, part of her regretted that her... preferences in companionship... couldn't give her a child of her own. But then, one night, she hunted down something so amazing, so beautiful, that when she offered it to Hircine, He granted her a child of her own. A child that was somehow of her and her lover's blood."

"I know this," said the wolf. "What is your point?"

Jessica Wolfir smiled, her teeth white and sharp. "No point. I just think it's funny how some things get to be history and others just stories."

very cool A/A! I do wish it was longer, but as a writer/poster on the meme I know that takes a lot of time and energy. Still, well-crafted and intriguing!
