Ideals of Adventure (5/5)

She made the necessary arrangements for the burial in his hometown of Rorikstead, planned a beautiful ceremony, invited every family member and friend the two of them had ever known, but it was all on auto-pilot. The world was a bleak place without Erik in it. The climate on Solstheim irritated her more, the once fascinating landscape of Skyrim had become cold and tedious. She had lost her reason. Her children and their sympathy came as a great comfort in her time of need, but it was still not enough to fill the gaping wound Erik’s death created in her heart. She spoke at the memorial, gave the traditional Nord rites, even said ‘the Nine Divines’, yet it all felt hollow.

As the wake progressed, Karin sat alone in the Frostfruit Inn, the same room they had met all those years ago. Over there, she had listened to him dream of caverns and ruins and treasure. And there, where she gave the money for Erik’s armour to his father. Just in the very next room, the place where they had been intimate together for the first time, and she panicked and left him. She left him. She had willingly given up valuable, precious time that she could have spent in the arms of the man she lost. Karin stared into her empty goblet of Firebrand Wine and considered ordering a fourth when she felt a presence to her side. It was Seanwen, and he seemed to be acting as discreetly as possible.
‘Mother, I bring urgent intelligence concerning the Thalmor.’
Karin pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed irritably. ‘Seanwen, I would prefer a few moments of peace-‘
‘Mother,’ he repeated more firmly, ‘I would not call it urgent if it was not urgent. Mounting evidence suggests the Aldmeri Dominion is preparing to launch a second invasion on the Empire soon. Full-scale, well-equipped.’
Abruptly, Karin’s determination to be self-pitying died. ‘The Empire isn’t suited to defend against a second war,’ she murmured, horrified, ‘it would be a massacre.’
‘Indeed.’ Seanwen muttered, matter-of-fact, ‘which is why you should come back with me, to Summerset Isle. We need to take the fight to the Thalmor, before they bring the fight here. If we could impede them for even a year, it would give the Empire time to prepare-’
Karin frowned. ‘This is all too idealistic, Seanwen. There is no possible way that two Altmer can be a match for the entire Aldmeri Dominion, even if just for a year.’
‘Maybe not,’ her son smirked, ‘but the Dragonborn and a double agent might.’ he saw the look of hesitation and concern on her face, and redoubled his effort to persuade her. ‘I hate to use this kind of manipulation, but isn’t this what father would want?’
‘You’re right,’ she grimaced, ‘it is manipulation.’
Seanwen pursed his lips and continued to stare at her, not impressed with her attempt at humour.
‘But you’re also right about what your father would want.’ she sighed, ‘when do we leave?’
‘Tomorrow at dawn, Laena and I will travel by carriage to Solitude, and from there we will sail to Alinor. You will accompany us.’
If Karin had lost the physical manifestation her reason to fight, she found it again in her son’s fiery eyes and her daughter’s kind heart. In her adopted children’s right to live free of persecution. In Erik’s ideals – freedom of worship, chivalry, right and wrong, and most importantly of all, adventure.

Ahh, this is adorable and *flail* *sobs*!

Also I really appreciated the fact that in the part where you described the children's adult lives, you had one of the girls marrying another woman :)
