Re: Innocent DB/Hadvar - "Useless" 1d/?

The Stormcloak met his sword with his own, the metal blades slashing against one another and ringing out, echoing from the cavern walls.
“Was this one for you?” the Stormcloak raged, swinging in anger as Hadvar met his attack stroke for stroke. “Your prize, for turning your back on your countrymen?” he scathed.
Hadvar didn't answer, darting under the Stormcloak's blade, then stabbing, driving deep into the man's side. Abigail winced as the Stormcloak shuddered violently, then fell to the ground.
Hadvar glared down, withdrawing his blade, wiping it against the fallen man's cuirass.
He whispered something, something Abigail didn't hear but that sounded a little like a prayer. Then he was at her side again, the dark look still on his face, his eyes still on the fallen Stormcloaks.
“Are you okay?”
Abigail nodded, ignoring the stabbing pain in her stomach, the fire coursing through her arm, and the hot grazes on her elbows and knees from when she'd fallen on the hard ground.
He looked down at her now, holding out his hand. “My dagger gone?”
Abigail winced as he hauled her to her feet, nodding. “I'm sorry. I told you I was useless.”
“Mmm, you are,” Hadvar dusted off her shoulders. “I should just kill you now and be done with the hassle.”
Abigail's heart skipped a beat as she paled, and Hadvar burst out laughing, patting her on the shoulder more comradely and moving back to the path.
“We're nearly through,” he called back. “Come on.”
Abigail riled and her frustration at being useless boiled over. She charged forward and pushed Hadvar in the back, hard.
Hadvar stumbled a little, but didn't fall, and turned, genuine shock on his face.
“What was that for?!”
Abigail's eyes flamed. “Just because I'm useless,” it came out in a rush, “and just because you've saved my life, doesn't mean you can bully me!”
“Bully you?” Hadvar took a step back toward her. “I'm doing everything I can to protect you!”
“By joking about killing me!” Abigail's eyes once again, mortifyingly, filled with tears.
Hadvar's face softened a little, and Abigail turned away. “I'm sorry I'm useless. I don't know how to fight. I've never held anything bigger than a kitchen knife in my hand. And I've nearly died today, more times than I can count.”
Hadvar was by her side, a hand on her shoulder. “It takes some getting used to,” his tone was kind.
His kind tone undid her, and her tears spilled forward, her hands covering her eyes straight away. She hated herself for crying, which made her only cry all the more.
“Here, little one,” he pulled her into a hug, and Abigail sobbed loudly, her hands still firmly pressed over her eyes and face, as he leaned her into his chest, his arms wrapped around her small frame in comfort. “This is Skyrim. We all nearly die every day. Before dragons,” he tried the last in a lighter tone, and Abigail huffed a little between her sobs.
“We're nearly through,” he pulled back, taking her hands and making her look at him.
Abigail could feel the wetness still dripping down her cheeks, slipping down her neck, and forced herself to breathe.
“My uncle lives not far from Helgen. We can hide out there until things have died down,” Hadvar continued.
Abigail breathed raggedly, shaking her head in astonishment. “Why are you helping me?” she asked quietly. “Nobody has helped me since I arrived here. Why now? Why you?”
Hadvar shrugged, and dropped his hands, moving down the path to the cavern exit. “Because it felt right to help you.”
