Black Ditch (1/?)
(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 07:40 am (UTC)(link)He was currently trying to get an adventurer to take up a bounty the Jarl had asked Falk to take care of weeks ago, but the young Breton looked anything but impressed.
She shifted from one foot to the other as she tried to determine if his opinion of ‘good gold’ would be in range with hers. Sighing, she began nodding her head.
“And this should only be a small pack of wolves?” She asked as she took the bounty slip from the taller man. “I won’t get there and find over five will I?”
Falk nodded, maybe a bit too hard, but he didn’t care. “From what travelers have said there are only four wolves.”
Humming, the Breton pocketed the slip. “I’ll be back soon for the reward.”
“Do be careful!” Falk had yelled to her as she walked away.
After leaving the Blue Palace, the Breton found her companion waiting for her by the city’s front gates.
“What took you so long, Elara?” Brelyna asked with a huff as the two exited the city.
“I wanted to get all the details on this bounty.” Elara snapped back. The two were an odd pair, constantly bickering, but when it came to battle, the two were a perfect match. With Brelyna’s magic abilities and Elara’s talent with a mace, they were undefeatable.
Elara pulled the slip from her pocket and handed it to Brelyna. “Falk said there are only four wolves at the cave, so this should take us barely anytime.”
The dark elf nodded her head as her eyebrows drew together. “Where is this?” She asked while pointing to the slip. “I’ve never heard of Black Ditch.”
Elara shrugged as they made it onto the main road. It had been beautiful all day, and now as the sun was setting, the evening was being to cool down. Masser was just beginning to become visible in the approaching night sky, and crickets were chirping.
“I wasn’t sure at first, but Falk marked it on our map.” The Breton said as she dug around through her shoulder bag. ”It isn’t that far from here, so we’ll be there soon.”
Brelyna grunted in response and the two women soon feel into an even walk.
Once the pair had made it to the mouth of the cave, they took inventory and thought out a simple plan. Night had fallen quickly, and they both knew visibility in the cave was going to be limited.
“I’ll make some candlelight so we can see where we’re going,” Brelyna began.
“And I’ll be in front with a shield and mace ready to fight.” Elara added.
Brelyna smiled and started again. “The wolves will probably be spread out a bit, so once we kill one of them, I’ll raise it to help us fight the others.”
Agreeing on the plan, Elara unstrapped her wooden shield from her waist and pulled out her glass mace. Brelyna entered the cave first, squatting low to the ground before creating candlelight to help guide the way. Elara slipped by her once the path was a little more visible, and crouched down similarly to the dark elf. Moving slowly and quickly, the two left the narrow opening and came into a bigger section of the cave.
Standing, Elara squinted and tried to make out any shapes in the room that may be a target.
“Make another candlelight.” She whispered and kept her guard up.
Brelyna shushed her companion but followed the command. She cast another candlelight, eliminating the room in a soft glow.
“Ooh Divines.” Brelyna mumbled.
Bones littered the cave floor, human and other. Shredded clothes were scattered about and blood stained the ground. But strangely enough, one of the wolves lay dead by the front of another path in the cave. Elara raised her hand, telling Brelyna to stay put as she approached the dead wolf. Kicking it onto its other side, Elara examined the wolf.
Three symmetrical gashes ran along the carcass’ side. The air filled with the smell of death and blood now that the wound was exposed to the air, and Elara gagged. Whatever had gotten the wolf had most definitely not been a sword, and Elara didn’t know of any weapon that would do something like this. The wolf’s bones were visible through the long wounds, the skin and muscle shredded like paper.
“Brelyna,” Elara whispered as she shuffled back to her companion, trying to make as little noise as possible. “I don’t think we should be here.”
