They were rumours going round the city. Tales of gleaming red eyes in the dark that were following you in the street at night. Whispers of smoke coming out from a fully cloaked figure. Reports talking about a woman with no shadows following her steps. Accounts of a grin composed with sharp teeth. Rumours of a vampire who left frost on the pillow of its victims.

The guards said that it was the thing that lived in the abandoned house that did this. That there was no vampire. But they were fresh bite marks adorning their arms and necks when they said that.

“Those guards are no longer guards of Markarth.” said one. “If there are any guards in our city, it’s those of that beast’s den!”
And those who heard him agreed. And so did the whole city not long after. Guards will be no help to track the monster. So they asked jarl Igmund for assistance. For protection. But he didn’t believe them. There were neither vampires nor Forsworns in his city. And the ones who contradicted him were send to Cidhna mine, accused of conspiracy, of plot. As soon as some people were sent down the silver hole, Markarth became quiet again. But whispers could still be heard in the Silverblood-Inn accusing a person or another. But most of these accusations led to nothing, as they were the result of an amount of fear, hate and of an exacerbated paranoia. Nonetheless there was one that rumours seemed to pursue. And those suspicions soon gangrened the city.

“Look!” one said at the marketplace, whispering to his neighboor. “She’s here!”

“Her eyes, Divines, have you seen her eyes?”

“And her skin! Gods, she’s so pale!”

“Shh... She’s looking at us!”

They stopped as her gaze fell upon them. Did she hear them? A bulky Nord came to her side, whispering something to her pointy ears. She frowned her brows as she heard his words and left the market soon after. Every eyes were fixed on her back.

“Did you see? Did you see?”

“What did he tell her?”

“Look, she’s wearing so many clothes! We can barely see her skin!”

“Isn’t that smoke coming out from her?”

And it continued in every houses, stores and buildings of the stone city. Regardless of the hour of the day or the place, the words “Thane” and “vampire” were in every mouth.

“So you’re saying that there is a... vampire in my city? And that this abomination would be a Thane of my hold?” Jarl Igmund asked sceptical.

“Y-yes my Jarl.” stuttered the bowing form of Tacitus Sallustius. He was impressed by Jarl Igmund’s presence.

“My Thane? The lady Mallari? A vampire?” insisted the Nord. “You know that those accusations are very serious, boy. She’s a very important person in our hold.”

“Y-yes my Jarl. I-I know it.”

“I thought she helped you improving your skills as a blacksmith. What evidences do you have to accuse my thane of being vampire?” Frowned the jarl.

“She... I-I-I... I-I mean her eyes are red and gleaming, she’s so pale! And sometimes, smoke seems to come out from her body! A-and she wears too much clothes to...”

The whole court burst into laughter. The Imperial looked around him nervously.

“Ah...Can you hear that?” the Jarl said loudly, turning to his courtiers. “This boy is accusing my thane, the lady Mallari, a person who willingly helped many people of my hold and who takes down dragons, bandits and giants of being a vampire! And what evidences did he bring to me? What did he said? That she wears too much clothes for his liking!”

Giggles echoed in castle. They weren’t taking him seriously. Even those Thalmors were grinning!

“It’s not only me!” cried out Tacitus. “Many people say that...”

“Enough!” roared the Jarl getting up from his throne. Tacitus gulped. He was even more impressive when standing. “You’re accusing MY court of hosting a vampire! I could send you to Cidhna mine for this! This is slander!”

“B-but my Jarl...”

“Guards!” ordered the Nord, sitting back on his throne.

Strong hands immediately silenced Tacitus.

“Take him out from my castle! And you! Mark my word, Tacitus Sallustius! You will shit silver bars in Cidhna til the end of your life if I hear more of those poisoned words you told us!” said Igmund menacingly. “Now, out of my sight!”

The guards bowed and few minutes after Tacitus’s body was hurtling down all the stairways of Markarth.

He failed. With the jarl on her side, the woman was nearly invincible.

But that was before the Silver-blood family intervened. A new rumour was going round the city.

“Look! It’s Thonar Silver-Blood!”

“A friend of mine works as a servant in their house...”

“Are the rumours true?”

Thonar shot a dirty look at the tell-tales. He will have them crying silver ores.

Thongvor dropped his fork.

“What did you just say?!”

“I said that Betrid has been bitten!” answered Thonar nervously.

To his brother’s request, Thongvor had dismissed their servants for the evening. Thonar told him that he had a bad new to announce him, something that no one had to learn.

“B...But... How? How is that possible?” asked Thongvor, anxious. “The Treasury House is the safest house in Markarth!”

“I don’t know!” Thonar said, frantic. “I really don’t have any idea Thongvor!”

The two brothers were stayed silent for a moment, both of them thinking. Thongvor took a sip of his wine.

“We need to find the one who did that, brother.”

Thonar looked at him, surprised.

“Because you were thinking I wasn’t going to kill the bastard who did this? Betrid is my wife! I might hate her, but she’s my wife! She’s one of us! She’s a Silver-Blood!” he exploded. “If I find out that fucking vampire I am going to...”

“Wait, you don’t know who is this vampire?” cut Thongvor.

“And how on Nirn could I know its identity, brother?” he spat, exceeded.

“You don’t really seem to go out of the Treasury quite often little brother...” noted Thongvor, resting on the back of his chair.

“No. My time is precious, I can’t allow myself to waste it at Igmund’s court as you do!” he answered angrily. “There’s no reason for me to interact with vulgar commoners!”

Thongvor snorted.

“Aren’t you interacting with a commoner when you bed your wife?”

“Oh shut up and just tell me what you know Thongvor.”

His brother stood up and walked through the room, picking up things here and there.

“Something really interesting happened the other day at Igmund’s court...” he said, holding a green apple. “An Imperial boy named Taci-”

“Just come to the point, Thongvor!”

“Alright, alright! Well, to sum up, the boy was convinced that the thane of the hold, that ...Mallari is the vampire that feeds on people at night. And he isn’t the only one who thinks that. I heard whispers in our inn.”

“Mallari... I already heard that name somewhere...”

“Indeed. She is thane in every hold, a feared warrior and a very skilled mage, able to take dragons down. I heard that she’s the Archmage of the College and that she disappeared mysteriously for months after joining a mercenary-like group. And...” his fists clenched. “She’s also Legate in the Legion. In fact, she was the one who made the Imperials won the civil war. And she... the bitch took Ulfric’s and Galmar’s head during the siege of Windhelm!” he cried out, breaking the apple in his hand.

“So it’s her...” Thonar answered, pensive. “Does this whore have any supporters in the city?”

“Apart from the Jarl, there’s the owner of the general goods store, Lisbet, a food seller named Hogni Red-Arm and Banning, the dog breeder. Oh, and there’s also that shady redguard silversmith, Endon. Despite the rumours, these ones still seems to support her. But I won’t be surprised if that stinky Thalmor Justiciar was on her side. Both of them are elves, and I saw him prowling around her when she was at court. Doing this... this disgusting thing of them, what they called “courting” in their Isles of my ass. ”

Thonar pursed his lips in anger. He hated elves, like his brother. Especially high elves. This bitch was going to pay. No one harms a Silver-Blood. No one.

“I have an idea.” He said after a moment. “I know how we’re going to bring that elven whore down.”

Deep inside the bowels of stone and silver that ran under the city, the brothers started to plot.

Argis was tired of all those eyes following him and his Thane when they were out. Tired of all their whispers. He wanted to make them stop, to crush their skulls when the words “vampire” and “thrall” were caught by his ears. But the sad face of his Thane always calmed him. He didn’t want to see this face. He wanted her to laugh, to smile. He was starving to see her laughing the ways she did before she joined the Dawnguard. At this time, Mallari was a joyful, radiant woman. At this time, she wasn’t a vampire. If only he hadn’t failed in his attempt to dissuade her to join the Dawnguard... He sighed and drank his mead, looking at her bedroom. He had to dig the past. If his thane needed him, it was now. In spite of the Jarl’s threat of sending to jail all those who’d be caught gossiping on vampirism and his thane, there were still people that came to Vlindrel Hall and who claimed they had things to do with his Thane. But Argis knew that they were lying and just tried to enter his Thane’s house to find evidences.

“I’m sorry but I’m afraid my lady can’t receive you at the moment.” Was all he said each time before throwing the bastard away.

Never letting one enters. The housecarl knew these people were dangerous, that they wanted to find his lady’s coffin and harm her during her sleep. To keep her away from dangers, he guarded her during her sleep. He even bought a dog, Vigilance, to Banning, even though they were already those two strange hounds guarding the house, Garmr and CuSith, which his Thane brought with her when she reappeared, and another dog, Meeko, that she had before he became her housecarl.

The four pets did their jobs quite well: Meeko and Vigilance were guarding the hall, Garmr and CuSith, his Thane’s bedroom. Argis even had the surprise to find the corpse of a spy a morning. The man was covered with bite marks. His Thane decided to report this to the Jarl and took care to say very loudly and distinctly so that anyone in the court could hear that her dogs were feeding on the spy’s corpse. Jarl Igmund didn’t say anything about that, only muttering that it was “her house and that spy deserves what’s happening to him”. Oddly, unwanted visits ceased after this episode. But only for a moment.

The breaking sun was only a thin red line on the horizon when a different game of lights and shades was playing in Markarth. People were massing outside the Silver-Blood Inn, the fires of their torches staining the stones with their dancing reflections. The stars were dying, their glow fading away, and eyes were now clinging to the gleam of iron, steel and silver.

Maces, swords, battleaxes and pitch forks were held firmly by men and women whose hearts were fuelled by fear and anger. Fear of what laid in the dark. Anger of being mocked and left at the mercy of what was hidden in the night.

A Nord climbed up on a stall. Thongvor Silver-Blood. Silence fell on the noisy mass as people saw him. He smiled mentally.

“My brothers, my sisters!” he cried, his voice echoing in the reach.

“Children of Markarth! Too much blood has been poured by this beast because of our Jarl’s blindness!"

"But I am no blind, and I’m not afraid to say aloud that a vampire has made its den here, bleeding our wives and our children! Each one of us saw it!” he shouted. “Each one of us saw this monster crawling out from this hole when the sun is starts to be low! A thing whose skin is ash then smoke to the light of the gods! A creature that feast upon our weak, sleeping bodies!"

"We did complain and this more than once. To the guards. To the Jarl. And what did they do? What did they do to stop this monster? Nothing! And enough of this!” he roared. “Enough of this!”

"He's right."

"Yeah, Thonar Silver-Blood is right. Enough of this!"

“Death to the monster!” screamed a woman here.

“Let's burn that beast alive!” echoed another voice.

“My brothers, we all know where’s this monster’s lair. Who wants to come with me?!” shouted Thongvor, raising his silver sword.

A sea of iron and steel emerged from the mob, cries of joy and songs of glory blooming beneath the crimson horizon.

“To Vlindrel Hall!”

Argis was polishing his new warhammer when deafening noises and clanks came to his ears. Vigilant and Meeko raised their ears, a low, menacing growls escaping their throats.

“What’s the matter, boys?” asked Argis when something suddenly tore the main door apart.

“Vigilant, Meeko!” called Argis. “To the bedroom!”

The dogs obeyed, running to Mallari’s room. Argis took his warhammer, waiting for the enemy to show up.

“This is Thane Mallari’s property! Be gone before I smash your heads you scum!”

Gleams of silver shined through dust. Silver-Blood mercenaries...

“I won’t said it twice!” warned Argis.

“So you’re the housecarl of this monster..." observed a disdnaiful male voice. Thonar Silver-Blood. "Hmpf. A Nord should never bow his ass to an Elf. You’re a shame for our kin, Argis the Bulwark.” he said, entering the hall of the house.

"What's the meaning of this Thonar? The lady Mallari's thane of Markarth!" rumbled Argis, warily. "You're insulting my thane!"

“Your thane did something that upset us, me and my family. She's the one that insulted us first!" spat Thonar.

"My thane did nothing to your family, Thonar!"

The other Nord giggled.

"You must be blind, dumb and deaf, housecarl. That bitch you call your 'Thane' is a vampire! She drank the blood of half the people living here!"

"You're lying, Silver-Blood!" shouted Argis. "My thane is no vampire and she-!"

"Enough of this!" cut Thonar, shouting. "Now tell us: where’s the coffin?!”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about! But if you do want a coffin, you’ll have one if you dare to do one more step in this house!” the housecarl shouted back.

Behind his brother, Thongvor snorted. "He must be her thrall." He grinned “Yngvar, go fetch me the thrall’s head.”

“Yes sir!” the brute said drawing out a steel warhammer. “Come at me, boy. I promise I’ll you live enough time to see your mistress’s undead cunt being fucked by my boss.”

The housecarl cried angrily and ran to his foe, swinging his warhammer to the head of his enemy. Yngvar blocked him.

“Getting cocky, are we, boy?” he grinned.

Argis answered with a raging blow, hitting Yngvar again and again at a pace rarely seen by someone who was fighting with a warhammer. The housecarl was fighting just the way an orc would, his rage seeming to give him an extra-amount of stamina. But Yngvar wasn’t an easy target, and even though he still didn’t hit his enemy yet, none of Argis’s strike touched him, his steel warhammer blocking every attack. He smiled contemptuously.

“Is-that all you have for-me, thrall?!”

Argis answered with a roar that would’ve make Yngvar shivered. If he hadn’t been Yngvar the Singer, of course. He laughed at the younger Nord messy strikes.

“I’ll write a song on your death, thrall!” he laughed, pushing the other Nord away so he would avoid another strike.

“Yngvar, stop being so silly, I said I wanted his goddamned head and I want it now!” ordered Thongvor.

The bard muttered.

“Kill him!”

“Alright, alright, got it, boss!”

Still blocking the other Nord’s attacks, Yngvar prepared himself to strike to Argis when he felt his knee giving out.

“What the?!”

As he fell on the ground, Argis’s warhammer hit his skull badly, sending him to Thongvor’s feet. The barbarian fainted from the blood loss.

“Who’s next?”

“He... He’s holding... Malacath, I can’t believe it...” gasped an orc mercenary. “His hammer it’s... It’s Volendrung!”

“Indeed. It bled your stupid bard from his stamina!” explained Argis, looking at the Silver-Blood brothers before exchanging his warhammer for a Nordic sword and a shield.

Thonar was boiling. He turned to the mercenaries and spat. “Bring-me-the-COFFIN!”

Argis stepped back, blocking the way to Mallari’s room with shelves and chairs.

“CuSith! Garmr! To me boys!” he called out. “This morning, you’ve got fresh meat for breakfast!” before slicing one opponent’s jaw.
The death hounds ran from his Thane’s room, their strange frost cloak activating while their jumped to the throat of two Nords, the blood seeming to make them fiercer than usual.

The housecarl blocked a dunmer that tried to pass him, hitting his face with his shield then sticking his sword in his back.

“Die, thrall!”

Someone hit him it the back.

“...What the...”

Or tried to. The blade slid on the housecarl’s armour. The mercenary noticed then the shining green daedric glyphs that adorned the housecarl's nord carved armor. It was enchanted with a powerful spell that fortified the metal.

“Seems it’s me who’ll send you to Oblivion!” roared Argis, his backward strike cutting through the leather armour of his opponent. CuSith and Garmr stepped back to his side, blood and flesh leaking from their mouth.

“Good work, guys.” Complimented Argis.

Dozen corpses were laying on the floor, their faces eaten for some of them. It probably frightened the others as the housecarl was now alone in the house. That was strange.

“Odd...” he whispered to himself.

It was too easy. Something bad was going to happen. He could smell it in the air. Wait, that smell...

“Burn it! Burn the vampire!”

Black smoke started to invade Vlindrel Hall. They were trying to burn them alive! What was the thing they weren’t ready to do to kill them?!

“My thane!” Argis ran out to her bedroom. “Vigilant! Meeko!”

Argis dashed to the fake wardrobe, nearly snatching it from the wall. Here, in the hidden cave laid the sleeping body of his Thane. He took her in his arms, covered the more skin he could with a velvet sheet then ran out from the secret room, flames started to lick the stony walls. When he arrived to the kitchen, new enemies where waiting for him. The four dogs set forth to the battleground, their sharp fangs tearing the flesh that was uncovered. They were ready to do anything to defend their mistress.

Argis wanted to join them, to break the neck of those who dared attempt to the life of Mallari but there was no time to left. Smoke was starting to fill his lungs and the heat increased inside the stone house. Knowing of his Thane’s weakness to fire, Argis knew he couldn’t stay here any longer. He called the dogs, drawing out his a glass dagger before charging at their opponents. He slashed through them as quickly as he could, making them fall one after another: his Thane enchanted the blade with a strong paralysis spell. One thin cut was enough.

“You’re not going to escape this place alive, thrall!” he heared Thongvor’s voice shouting somewhere in the distance. He spat on the ground, stabbing fiercely a Redguard mercenary. That silver bastard rots in Oblivion!

The housecarl coughed. The air was full or sulphur and it was becoming harder to breathe. They had to flee. Quickly, before her skin started to burn. The single thought of his Thane’s body burning in his arms got him mad, making him slash a way out of Vlindrel Hall through his enemies’ flesh. Once out, Argis breathed heavily, filling his lungs with pure air. But the battle wasn’t over yet.

Citizens threw themselves on him, trying to stab Mallari. No!
“OUT OF MY WAY!” roared the Nord, kicking a citizen in the belly.

His battlecry echoed on the walls, resonating in the whole city. Its effects weren’t long in coming: their brain frightened to its core, Markarth people ran away, allowing the housecarl a quick and safe way to escape, his dogs following him. Once outside, he ran to the stables, jumped on Shadowmere’s back and headed to the nearest cave, soft ashes on his hands as his Thane’s skin started to smoke.

They reached Blind Cliff Cave without any problems. Luckily for, his Thane cleared the area not long ago and it was a safe place for them. Argis sighed, looking at her. She was still sleeping. It’s been two hours since they were here. Nothing would wake her, he knew it.

Vampires cannot be awoken by something external. That’s why you’ll have to protect me when I sleep, Argis.

CuSith and Garmr were running after a baby skeever. Vigilance was sleeping at the cave entrance and Meeko was looking at Mallari. Argis took his head in his hands. He closed his eyes in exhaustion. It was a living nightmare.

Meeko barked.

“What is it, Meeko?” he asked, eyes still shut.

“Argis...?” He opened his eyes.

She was awake. He started to cry.

“M...Mallari? You’re...Oh gods...”

“What is this place? Why am I here?” she asked, disappointed.

Argis lowered his head in shame.

“I I-am sorry my thane... Your house, they... Couldn’t protect you...”

She took him in her arms.

“I failed...I’m so... Sorry...” he cried.

“Shhh...You didn’t fail, Argis. I’m alright.”

Her voice was low and her soft hands were stroking absently her housecarl’s hair.

“Everything is alright...”

She will find the lesser leech that came to her city and tried to trick and murder her.

/ Thought it was Mallari the culprit, eh? Actually, in the middle of writing this I decided that... nah. Not her. The perspective of another "lesser" vampire trying to murder a vampire lord by turning a whole city against her was too appealing.

/ Basically I just wanted to write something with Argis and witch hunt, with torches and everything. I mean, when your PC is a vampire it's obvious and it's like no one is giving a single fuck.

/ When I finished this and re-read it to correct eventual mistakes, I noticed how similar it was to Movarth's quest in Morthal.

/ I hate the Silver-Blood family. But gods, I loved to write Thongvor and Thonar here.

/Useless notes you may encounter later in the story of have already encounter

Mallari disappeared for months after a mission she did for the Dawnguard.

"Normal" vampires can't help serving a vampire lord when they're near one and can be thralled by them too.
