Green Eyed [12/12] END

Kerek turned, thankful for the help, but reluctant to show it. The voice belonged to a tiny dark elf, with striking black hair and ruby red eyes. “We’re really not supposed to have visitors, but our new arch-mage insists.”

He nodded emptily, not understanding a word she was saying. “I’m looking for a Breton woman.” He said finally, and the dunmer laughed.

“Most women here are Bretons.” She explained. “What’s her name?”

“Ryla.” Kerek said quietly, the feeling of her name in his mouth strange after all these years.

The dunmer’s face fell. “Then, are you him? Are you Kerek?” Kerek shrugged, he didn’t know what Ryla had said about him while here, but didn’t want to be under fire, perhaps literally. “We’ve heard so much about you! I’ll bet she’s in the Hall of the Elements. Come, I’ll show you the way.”

Kerek felt like a stranger. Which he was, but it wasn’t like in Whiterun where he was just another guy making a living. He knew absolutely nothing about these people or what drove them to wake every morning.

The dunmer pushed open a tall set of double doors, interrupting what seemed to be a lecture. The mages in the room turned to look at him and Kerek felt half his size. “Hello.” He said meekly, his voice echoing around the room making him feel ashamed. Clearing his throat he asked, “Is Ryla here?”

The woman near the front of the crowd finally turned, her ice spell dwindling in her lack of concentration. “Kerek?” She asked and her voice also echoed. “Are you really here? There’s so much to show you!” She took a few hurried steps towards him, then turned back to face the crowd, her light blue robes twirling with her speed. “Lecture dismissed. Meet here at the same time tomorrow if you’re still interested.”

It was nice to catch up with Ryla. Kerek told her all about how he had worked for Belethor and Adrianne. How he had tried to work for Arcadia, but his hands were too large to handle some of the ingredients. Ryla’s laugh was music to his ears. Her smile made him smile.

“What about you?” Kerek asked, awkwardly motioning towards her over their tankards of mead. “How did you become Arch-Mage?”

Ryla shrugged, a blush creeping over her cheeks. “It was all accidental, I assure you. Things just…” She hesitated, her eyes drifting away from him and her face falling. “Fell apart.”

Tentatively, Kerek reached across the table, her hand disappearing underneath his. “I think it’s wonderful.” The words that came from his mouth didn’t seem to belong there. Kerek couldn’t help but think that someon eelse should have been saying them, his voice was all wrong, too gruff.

Ryla looked up at him, her eyes solemn. “Kerek,” she started her voice quiet. “I’m so sorry.”

Kerek scoffed before she could finish. Ryla was apologizing? It was he who should be apologizing, not her. How much had he screwed her life up? How much damage had he done? He opened his mouth to express his thoughts, but Ryla silenced him.

“You took too long. I... I found, someone else.”

Kerek looked at her, his heart breaking. Distantly, he felt humor bubbling up from the deep dredges of his gut. This tiny little Breton had broken his heart too many times to count. “We’re quite happy. His name is Enthir, he’s a bosmer and works at the college. We... We have a daughter.” Ironically, Kerek smiled. That old saying, that nobody bests an orc? Well, the dragonborn could, and she didn’t even have to brandish her blade…

Author's Note: This isn't a very good ending, and this isn't my best work, and I'm sorry OP. I will try to do better in the future. Posting fills while they're still in progress isn't going to be something I can do anymore. It messes up the flow. Thank you guys for reading, though. :)
