ANNOUNCEMENTS: UPDATED 12/16/2017
Happy Holidays, fellow Kinkmemers! I have returned and have no reasonable excuse for my absence except LIFE. I will be working on updating the archives. If anyone sees anything amiss, please let me know.
I am also hoping to find another Mod and an Archivist.
The more dedicated people we have in this Meme the less chance of it dying. I admit that being the sole keeper of the Meme is not great for the fandom. If something were to happen to me, for good, this place would go the way of the Fallout Kink Meme. Let's not let that happen! If anyone would be interested in Modding/Archiving, please drop me a line. Thanks! <3
Re: What's a Thief to a King? M!DB/Ulfric 22/??
Date: 2013-02-12 07:25 pm (UTC)This section was all about tension. Tension is what seperates a good lover from a bad one. The right amount of tension makes sex amazing. The wrong amount make's it a best boring, and at worse, scarring. Luckily for us, Dyce knows all about tension, as do you, my Dyce!anon. His skill at moving tension up and down, combind with his ruthless emotional honesty, is what makes him the hero of the Kink meme.
This chapter simmered with tension.
Of course, the night before a big battle is tense. The night before the battle that could end the war is extremely tense. It could have been brutal- men shuddering, refusing to meet each other's eyes, and getting drunk on anything alcohalic that could be found. But it's not, because of Dyce. Dyce who's able to take that tension and blunt it, with his stories of Sovngarde. It's not pretty stories, but it's honest, and that's what was needed.
You have another wonderful line here: “We’re Nords. Our culture is made of stories. You should feel proud that you’ve added to them. You will not be forgotten.” Which is brilliant. My favorite line in the whole companions questline is when Kodlak dies, and Vilkas is losing it, demanding that the Dragonborn go with him to wipe out the Silver Hand, and he says, "There will be none left to tell their stories, only songs of Jorrvaskr will be sung." That's Vilkas at his most upset: the worst thing he can think of to do to someone is to elimiate their stories.
Some people don't believe Ulfric is sincere when he has the Dragonborn make the last blow of the civil war, either ending himself or Tullius, 'because it will make a better story.' But he is, and you get that. Verbal histories are what makes Nordic culture. It's not that they're a big part of Nordic culture, it's that they define Nordic culture. I love that you observed that detail and made it part of your story.
That brings us to Ulfric and Dyce's tete-a-tete, where you twist the tension in a different way. They are two men who both need the other right now. Ulfric needs a human connection, comfort and succor, to know that he's alright and that his actions haven't made him a 'bad man', whatever that may be. He needs Dyce's redemption.
Dyce, on the other hand, needs something not very different. He needs something outside of himself. Something he can believe in, something that tells him that what he's doing will be right. The difference is Ulfric needs a peer, something he's almost never allowed himself, and Dyce needs a leader, some one above him he can believe in, something he's never allowed himself.
In this instance, Dyce gets what he needs, and Ulfric gets a consulation prize, of knowing he's needed and valued. From Dyce, that's a pretty big prize.
Finally we close with Ralof, who's been a solid third in this story, almost without realizing it. And once again, a very different tension. Here it's not between Ralof and Dyce, they're very peacable. It's between who their missing: Hadvar. I firmly believe that somewhere in Castle Dour, Hadvar is worrying about Ralof and Dyce. Here you've found the truth of why a civil war is so devastating and you honor that.
The other big theme here, which I've ignored, is 'faith'. The Stormcloaks have their faith of Sovngarde reinforced, Dyce has faith in Ulfric's leadership, and encourages Ralof to have faith that Hadvar will be okay, one way or another.
Okay, so, brilliant section here. I could go on, but you've posted more story and I want to get to that. Thank you so much for this. I hope you feel all the love everyone is sending your way.
