Interesting prompt, but if you read 'Frontier, Conquest, Accomodation' it says they were living peacefully. And I thought they bred with wild elves (woodelves?) which is why they're so short? Not hating, just curious about lore I guess.

Not OP, but I'd always thought the Bretons were predominantly Altmer/human instead of Bosmer/human, which is why they're naturally talented in magic? Although, you have a point about their height.

It's from the Pocket Guide to the Empire (1st Edition), which admittedly reads like propaganda at times, but generally seems to line up with the history from other sources. Here's the relevant bit:

"Aside from Imperial rule, Bretons are connected only in their language, geographic location, and the ancient rift that separated them from their Nordic progenitors, the Night of Tears.

Khosey, in his 'Tamrilean Tractates,' transcribes a firsthand account of the "discovery" of the Bretons by a Nordic hunting party. The Bretons, in ten generations of Elven intermingling and slavery, had become scarcely recognizable as humans. Indeed, the hunting party attacked them thinking they were some new strain of Aldmeri, halting their slaughter only when one of the oldest began to wail for his life, a shrieking plea that was spoken in broken Nordic. When word of this reached Windhelm, the Nords reasoned that the "Manmeri" beyond the Reach were, in fact, descended from human slaves taken during the Elven destruction of Saarthal."

No, they are definitely Altmer descendents, there's a huuuge amount of lore about it.

The reason they're stereotyped as small/sickly/frail (remember the days of physical stats?) has to do with the fact that elf/man genetics were never meant to Do That. Bretons break the general rule that 'half-breeds' aren't a thing in Tamriel, you're always just your mother's race, and it's never explained what freakish thing went down to change that.

Additionally, Breton men aren't even short. They're flat average human height, officially in the game engine stats. It's the women who are short. Bosmer, meanwhile, have average height women and short men. So they don't even have that in common.
