Re: THALES ~ 17/17 Epilogue

Her eyes moved from corner to corner, every cavity on the walls and halls but there was no sign of the little bundle of joy. With quick steps she walked down the long hall and bursted out into the main hall. For a moment her ears perked up as she heard laughter and the sound of metal hitting stone. He better not be doing what she thinks he’s doing.

She just arrived from a long journey along with Serana. They decided to go raid her family castle of some much needed items for the guild, and luckily both made it back in time for the feast. This day is one her father reserves to have a big, fancy dinner and celebrate the day they met for the first time years ago.

“Haren?” Her voice echoed as she made her way to the courtyard through the war room.

The sound stopped and a small child turned to smile toothily at her with bright green eyes. “Mama! You’re back!” The little thing dropped the sword (larger than his own body) and ran to her arms as she bent down to wrap them around him.

“My darling, I missed you so!” She stood up with him in her arms and kissed his face over and over as he giggled in delight.

A hearty laugh from behind her interrupted their sweet reunion. Thales twitched to accommodate the child on her hip as she held him up against her then turned around to see her father smiling at them.

“Father, you know he’s not allowed to be near any weapons. He’s only four!”

“Aye, take it up to your man. He left me here to watch him while he fetched a shield small enough for him to hold.” Ulfric walked up to her patted her shoulder warmly (or as warmly as he could) then ruffled the child’s dark hair.

“Oh no,” Vilkas said from the entrance of the courtyard, almost dropping the shield he has between his hands. “It’s not what it looks like.”

She glared at him, but then Haren wiggled out of her arms and jumped down, running to his father and reaching up for the shield. “Can we fight now, papa?” He asked, smiling enthusiastically at Vilkas.

“Hold on a second, let your mother murder me first,” he said jokingly as he approached her and kissed her forehead. “How was the trip back?”

Sighing, she watched as her small child tried his best to lift the heavy shield. “Not bad. I checked up on Sapphire and Vilkas on my way here. They’re definitely having twins.”

Vilkas let out a loud laugh and slapped his thigh a couple of times. “I knew one of us would have twins. How interesting, Haren will have family to play with besides your father and his guards.”

She smiled tenderly down at said little person. Who would’ve thought that everything would play out perfectly and harmoniously. Five years ago she thought she’d die inside the belly of a dragon, today? Today she wakes up late, feeds Haren and Aventus, the other child of hers, then they spend some days either playing outside of learning from Wuunferth, Ulfric’s sorcerer (and proclaimed educator of her children).

Rarely they hear of a dragon attack, thus leaving her (and Vilkas) to enjoy their life to the fullest.

“Yes, it’s good. They could come over and stay with us, or he could go with them and help out with the infants.”

“That would certainly teach him responsibility,” Ulfric added as he bent down to tell Haren how to ‘properly’ hold on to the shield and the sword.

Vilkas nodded and then wrapped his arms around her from behind. “Aventus is going to be happy too,” he added softly by her ear.

Speaking of. “Where is he? I thought Brynjolf would be back with him by now.”

THALES ~ 17b/17 Epilogue

“He’s probably held up. Don’t fret, woman, he’s staying a couple of days to talk business with you is he not?”

Nodding, they pulled apart from each other and decided to make their way inside. While she was exhausted, she still needed to bathe and eat something.

Ulfric stayed out with his grandson, and she trusted him wholeheartedly to take good care of him as he plays around with the weapons.

“There you guys are,” Serana spoke as they walked into the main hall.

Vilkas smiled and nodded at her in acknowledgement and she did the same.

“Sorry, I had to see Haren before retreating to bathe. Want to join? Thales asked her and the other nodded immediately.

“Yes, I want to change clothes as fast as possible. I’ll just borrow some of yours.”

Vilkas rolled his eyes at the ladie’s chatter and walked straight up to the long table and served himself some mead.

Washing her hair, Thales looked up as Serana scrubbed her arms. “Hey, Serana, are you ever going to look for someone?” She asked, hoping the question wasn’t too abruptly brought to the table.

The Nord woman stopped her scrubbing and looked up at her in surprise. “Why do you ask?” She frowned slightly, but Thales knew it wasn’t in anger or anything alike. They’re very close friends now, she’s the closest she’s ever been to someone besides Vilkas.

“I’m just wondering. It seems like everyone is now finding a place in the world. I don’t mean to insinuate the place is with someone, but…” She waved her hand in the air before continuing washing her hair.

“Hmm,” she hummed in thought. It was recently that Serana decided to be at peace with her past and turn herself a mortal. Something her mother didn’t agree with, but at this point Serana was sick of living forever. She wanted her life to run along with Thales, and that warmed her heart.

“I’m sorry, I was just curious. I always thought you and Brynjolf would—”

“Would what?” The woman interrupted her with an amused expression. But the light blush on her cheeks didn’t go unnoticed her Thales.

“I don’t know, you two seemed to be getting closer and closer the more I saw you.”

Serana looked away and smiled teasingly, “maybe, who knows.”

And that was the end of the conversation. They finished and quickly got ready for supper. When both walked out, Thales was delighted to see Brynjolf standing by the hallway that led to the private rooms.

“Bryn!” She called out to him enthusiastically and walked up to hug him. “I was worried you weren’t going to show up.”

“And how can I miss to see your face when you find out that Aventus wants to come live with us.”

The redheaded Imperial backed away in surprise and then looked around to find the young man with her eyes. Aventus was looking for a good apple to eat from the table, and once he found one he turned and both stared at each other for a moment. He was still young, fifteen winters to be exact. But to the world of Skyrim he was old enough to do as he pleases.

“Woman, don’t worry about it. We can talk it over another day,” Vilkas said to her, trying to be reassuring and supportive.

“I,” she began to say but then shook her head as if trying to clear out the thoughts from her mind. “Yes, that sounds perfect.” She smiled at Vilkas and then asked, “when is the food going to be ready, do you know?”

Her husband shrugged. “No idea, but let me ask the cooks.” With that he walked away and disappeared through a stone hallway leading to the kitchens of the palace. It didn’t take long for him to appear again to tell her it’d be out soon.

Not much later, domestic workers began to fill the room moving things around and setting plates, cups, tankards, and more on the long table. Every place at said table was being set with everything any noble or closest friend of Ulfric’s could ever need.

The first time he held this party, she had been pregnant with Haren and nervous. So very nervous. Unlike her father, she didn’t grow up amongst royalty and nobles and such. Her life had been out on the streets. Being forced to spend time with people who couldn’t comprehend that kept her on edge. But now, now she’s calm and collected about it. In fact, she’s even made friends with some of them.

No one knew she was the Dragonborn aside from those she told years ago, and that helped her calm down as well. No one would bring up questions about it or comments on it.

Vilkas grabbed her upper arms from behind her and then rubbed them up and down. “Don’t be nervous, it’ll be alright.”

“I know.”

~

Ulfric stood up and held his cup high in the air. Everyone immediately turned their full attention to the High King of Skyrim, as they’ve been doing for the past couple of years.

“Today marks another year that I got to spend by my daughter’s side. A brave and strong woman, worthy of the legacy she carries with her. To Thales!”

She blushed (as she does every year) as they all lifted their drink up in the air and then took a sip. A laugh escaped her as she saw Haren imitating the rest of the men and the woman with her cup of milk. Then her eyes swept over everyone, noticing little things she knows about, but still warm her heart. Like her father looking down and serving her son food, or Vilkas chatting like never before with some of the nobles around him. It didn’t go unnoticed by her the way Brynjolf sat closer to Serana, talking in low voices with her.

It’s moments like this that she realizes how good she has it. Never in her wildest dreams did she think she’d end up with this much wealth, and she’s not necessarily talking about gold. A family, friends, safety, health. It’s wonderful, and it’s something she’d always dream of when she was still a lonely, homeless child traveling Cyrodiil and Hammerfell, and all those places she got to know before arriving at Skyrim.

“How do you feel?” Her father asked, looking up at her from where he was cutting some meat for Haren. She probably looked dazed and somewhat lost with the look on her face as she took everything in.

With a smile that was brighter than what Ulfric was expecting, Thales closed her eyes and shook her head gently. Her hand shot out to hold Vilkas, who turned to look at her with a loving smile before giving his attention back to the nobles.

“Never been better.”
