"This isn't him."

"Look, he's a Bosmer, isn't he? So is this one."

"The one we're after has some great heifer of a Nord stumbling along behind him."

"Maybe they got split up."

"I really don't think this is him."

Lendri tugged Ralof's arm in the direction of the snowfields, but the Nord wasn't going to have it. "They killed some innocent hunter," he whispered, under cover of the vampires' bickering. "We must avenge him!"

"He's already dead. Killing the vampires won't shange that! We can come back and give him funeral rites tomorrow if it will make you feel better."

But Ralof had already drawn his axe. He shrugged away the elf's hand and rushed the nearest vampire, cleaving into the back of the nearest one before the other three could even react. The remaining vampires spread out immediately, forcing Ralof to turn his back to at least one of them. He charged the one foolish enough to use a frostbite spell on a Nord; the knife it desperately drew as he got closer was no match for an axe. Behind him he could hear the whirr of an arrow and the thump of a body flopping down into the snow; Lendri must've decided to help him.

He decapitated the vampire with the knife, leaving a bright arc of blood on the snow, then turned to see the elf battling the master vampire, fending off knife blows while the vampire slowly drained his life, the spell lighting the clearing with an eerie red glow. Ralof's heart jumped in fear. The haft of the axe was slippery with blood as he crossed the clearing a few quick bounds. The vampire spotted him then and immediately broke off, turning invisible. Footprints stamped on the snow, streaking toward the forest.
The elf stumbled back several steps. "He was pulling my blood out through my skin," he said, a little dazed.

"He didn't--you're not a vampire now, are you?"

"I don't think so."

"Yeah, good...damn, Lendri, that could've been...I didn't think this would happen."

"You should've just stopped at 'I didn't think'. Come on. There's a hunter's cabin not far from here."

"They'll let you stay there?"

"Yeah. All the hunters know eachother. Besides, there might not even be anyone there tonight."

The camp was indeed abandoned--it didn't look like anyone had been there for a while. Ralof was secretly relieved. He hadn't relished the thought of arriving at the camp and finding something that might have belonged to that poor unlucky hunter the vampires had slain. They ate roast rabbit for dinner, and niether of them spoke throughout the meal. In fact, they were on their bedrolls, and Ralof was facing away from the fire, half trying to fall asleep, by the time the silence was broken.

"Hey, Ralof."

The Nord turned. On the other side of the fire he could see the elf, propped up on one elbow, watching him intently. The flames made his eyes gleam strangely.

"Yeah?"

"You know I didn't mean it, about leaving you in the woods, right?"

"Of course. You know you'd never get anything done without me."

"Things are gonna start to chafe if you keep stroking your ego like that."

"Yeah, yeah. See you in the morning."

(I might leave it here, but I do have plans for a short epilogue in which Lendri tries to use examples a Nord would understand to make Ralof understand the importance of sneaking.)

OP here

Fave line: Ralof tried not to smile, because he knew it would only make things worse, but he found it funny how Lendri seemed to forget Nordic grammar whenever he got really angry. "I'm sorry. Hey, at least I didn't yell victory or Sovngarde."

Aw, I'm sorry it's finished, this was so much fun!

I hope you do do that little epilogue - Ralof could use some lessons :)
