“My apologies,” Olria said. “Guess I’m just so popular, you know?” She took the letter from his hands and felt it. Sure enough, there was a circular impression inside. She almost jumped up and down. Olria couldn’t believe her luck. “Thanks!” she said, dashing away.

She paused on a quiet section of stairs on the way back up to Dragonsreach. She debated opening the letter, but decided against it. Farengar loved exploring documents, the thrill of investigation and figuring things out for himself. If the ring proved to be valuable or magical, or even just a piece of useless, tarnished silver, he would be excited with the discovery all the same. Olria clutched the envelope tightly and went into Dragonsreach.

Farengar looked up from his desk as she glided into his workroom. He lifted his eyebrows, eyes narrowing suspiciously. The corner of his lips quirked upward. The man’s eyes followed her as she came around the side of the desk. Olria didn’t think he’d even moved since she’d left.

“What do you have there?” he asked, already smelling a surprise.

“I haven’t the faintest idea,” Olria said. Well, that was a bit of a stretch. She knew it was a ring, but she didn’t know if it was a special ring. It was probably just blemished, useless silver. At the very least, it would be a reminder of the living, breathing dragon they had both witnessed together.

Olria passed the letter to her mentor. Farengar looked just like a boy as he held it up to the light, squinting through the white envelope. As he shook it, they both heard something shifting around inside. He lifted one eyebrow and broke the seal. Drawing out the folded missive inside, he let the ring spill into his cupped hand.

His eyebrows shot higher as he inspected the ring even more closely than he’d inspected the envelope. Olria couldn’t contain her curiosity any longer. “Come on,” she urged. “Read the letter already! It will tell us if it’s anything special.”

The man gave her a knowing smile. Farengar didn’t ask her where she’d found the ring – he was shrewd enough to note its neglected state and draw the right conclusions. He set the ring on the desk and unfolded the letter. He read aloud:

Miss Byrns,

Thank you for choosing Arben’s Jewellers. I apologize for the delay. We were all quite amazed to hear about how you came across such a relic.

The ring is indeed enchanted. Unfortunately, the enchantment does not possess any excessive potency. In fact, you could purchase a ring with a similarly powered enchantment in much better condition for around three-hundred septims. I would encourage you come visit Arben’s Jewellers should you wish to purchase such a ring.

Arben

Olria let out a sigh. “Well,” she said. “I was hoping for something a bit more impressive than that.”

“Three-hundred septims isn’t something to just bat an eye at,” Farengar chuckled. “Hm, the man didn’t describe its magical properties.”

Olria frowned. “Will you be able to tell?”

“Of course,” he smirked. He slipped it on. It was too loose for his ring finger, so he switched it to his index finger. It fit perfectly. The ring was more of a tarnished band than anything, barely worth calling jewellery. Olria almost felt embarrassed that he was wearing it.

Farengar’s gaze turned inward. Then he smiled.

“Well?” Olria demanded, fidgeting beside him.

“Hmmmm,” he said, drawing out the sound, lips pursed. His eyes were hooded. The man leaned back in his chair, hands folded in front of his lips. He regarded her with a sly expression.

“Tell me!” Olria moved forward, standing over him, ready to shake the court wizard by the shoulders if he didn’t reveal the nature of the enchantment.

“This ring appears to bolster my magicka pool,” he said, still regarding her.

“Ah… oh!” Olria said. For some reason, his steady gaze made her blush. “Is that… good? Do you like it?”

“Very much so,” Farengar announced. “You were so sneaky that I never suspected a thing.” He paused. “I think I ought to thank you… quite personally.” The court wizard glanced over his shoulder and saw no one in sight beyond the threshold of his workroom. Then, since she was still standing beside his chair, he hooked an arm under her knees and stood. Olria let out a laugh that was more of a gasp as he lifted her of her feet.
