The Low Way In 2/? (F!DB)

Her dreams were deathly quiet.

Hekivah was standing in a familiar courtyard. She knew that behind her lay the door inside, though she dared not turn around. A white stone wall encirled the far side of the courtyard, obscured by the tangle of wildflowers and bracken. She walked to the wall, running her hands over the stones. When she glanced upwards, the wall seemed to stretch on forever, the sky a faint white glimmer above.

On her first day there, she had climbed this wall. She'd seen her spymaster looking on approvingly, and known that it was a test. It only took a few moments to reach the top of the wall. From there she could see the city stretching out beyond her, and she perched above it all.

Now the wall was monstrous. Another test, no doubt. Had she not proved her worth ten times over?

The silence gave her no answer.

She had just pressed a hand against the wall when something touched her.

Hekivah jerked await with a start, her fist lashing out at whoever had a grip on her arm. A mistake. Her head throbbed at even this slight movement, and her assailant caught her wrist befor ethe punch made contact.

"Wha-What do you want?" Hekivah snarled, tearing herself away from the hands clumsily.

The day had not yet dawned, and the inn was as silent as her dreams.

Her assailant stepped forward into the dim predawn glow. She was a tall Dunmer woman, with long red hair pulled back and a fierce glower turning down the corners of her mouth.

She looked... familiar.

"Dragonorn," the Dunmer growled, taking a step closer.

The fog of alcohol that had seen Hekivah to sleep had been replaced by a low, throbbing ache that made even the simplest of thoughts difficult. Finally, she put a name to the face glaring over at her. "Irileth." From what she remembered, the Dunmer woman was some kind of bodyguard for the Jarl. She was the one who had gone out with Hekivah to face the dragon- and honestly had done much of the work of killing the beat.

Before she could formulate a question, Irileth had taken her by the collar and dragged her out of bed, then picked up Hekivah's armor from where it had been strewn the night before and tossed it to her. "Dress."

Hekivah found herself complying. The ache behind her eyes pulsed away steadily, deterring any thought of demanding answers from this intruder. Even if she could have thought of questions, besides what in Oblivion is going on? Which could be applied to the last few days as a whole.

As soon as Hekivah had fumbled into her armor, Irileth took her by the arm and dragged her down the stairs and out the front door of the inn. Outside, Whiterun had yet to stir. The sun was just beginning to peak over the mountains in the distance, and the quiet was disturbed only by the omnipresent rush of White River and the voices of guards on their patrols.

A few breaths of the crisp morning air warred with the feverish feeling in Hekivah's head, leaving her feeling unbalanced. She stumbled after the silent Dunmer, pulled along by the death-grip Irileth had one her arm.

By the time they reached the top of the stairs that led to Dragonsreach, Hekivah was swaying like a drunk again. The ache in her head was increased tenfold by each step, and her stomach was roiling, threatening to make her situation even worse. She swallowed and tried to keep pace with Irileth.
