----------------------------
Helgny Grey-Hammer decided she would take the night off. It was the long-awaited festival for the Burning of King Olaf and the world with its problems could wait. She checked her reflection in the looking glass of her dressing room in Proudspire Manor. She decided to wear her raven hair down for a change, the long waves were wild and cascading down her shoulders and back. She had even braved the snide comments of Taaire and Endarie at Radiant Raiment and purchased a special dress for the evening, not desiring to wear her Dragonbone armor for the occasion. The luxurious garment was off the shoulders and swept loosely above her ample breasts, gathering at her waist and flaring over hips like water. The deep plum shade complimented her hair and fair, Nord skin, igniting the green of her eyes.

Satisfied with her appearance, she stepped back to fasten her amulet of Kynareth. It was then she heard Jorn's drums begin, signaling the start of the festival. She looked to the window and saw the last light of dusk sinking over the mouth of the Karth River, setting the water ablaze in hues of red-gold. Helgny hastily slipped on her jeweled shoes and secured her ebony dagger - she was never without at least one weapon - and made her way out to the courtyard her home shared with the Bard's College.

She was met with people carrying torches on their way to the festival. The sounds of drums and flutes mingled with the excited buzz of conversation as the citizens of Solitude began to properly celebrate the beloved but recently belabored tradition. With the murder of High King Torygg, his young widow and the Jarl, Elisif, had canceled the ceremony believing it to be inappropriate. Helgny had played a major role, along with members of the Bard's College, Jorn in particular, in convincing Elisif to allow the festival to take place.

Helgny stopped to greet Evette San and was immediately handed a stout mug of her Spiced Wine in gratitude.

"Evette, you don't have to do that. At least, allow me to pay you."

"No, no. I'll not hear of it! Because of you, the Bard's College placed a large order for the festival and the Blue Palace has now decided to regularly order from me. I owe you everything." Helgny smiled and bowed in thanks. She walked passed the other vendors selling their wares, smiling and chatting with the many she had helped in one way or another. After a moment, she heard a familiar voice behind her.

"Well, if I didn't know any better, Dragonborn, I might think you were the Jarl." She turned around to see Captain Aldis of the Imperial Army.

"Aldis, whatever do you mean?" She asked, grinning.

"There is hardly a person in Solitude, nay Skyrim, that has not benefited from your heroic deeds Helgny. Always willing to help some poor sod deliver a package, kill a skeever infestation," he looked at her smiling, "or you know…save the Empire. Just little things like that."

"Ha! Oh, and I once stole a sweet roll to feed a beggar." Helgny laughed, her eyes sparkling in the firelight.

"Committing crimes, eh? I may have to lock you up and throw away the key." Aldis joked.

"Eager to see me bound and helpless Aldis?" Helgny teased, raising an eyebrow and crossed her arms. Aldis' cheeks darkened.

A cool breeze greeted her and she gratefully breathed it in. She stood watching the moons cast a pale light over the water and then, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Jorn standing there.

"How are you enjoying the festival?" He asked, his ceremonial eye paint making his blue eyes stand out like beacons in the night.

"Oh, very much. I am glad it could all work out." She leaned back against the wall. "I'm glad you were able to perform tonight - you seem to get lost in your music."

"Well, I could say the same about you Helgny." He stepped toward her, leaning an arm against the wall. "I saw you dancing to my drumming, how the primal beat moved you." He looked at her. "I liked watching you dance, enjoying yourself. You don't lose yourself like that, do you?"

"No, no…I was just being silly. Too much Spiced Wine." Helgny instantly responded, but then found herself wondering why she was brushing off his advances.

"You should take one night off, you know, from saving the world." Jorn leaned incredibly close, almost whispering in her ear.

"I am taking the night off, I'm enjoying myself here at the festival." She looked at him, her lips slightly apart.

"I wonder, have you ever really let yourself go? Give in to your deepest impulses?" He brought his hand up to her face, tracing her jaw with his fingers, "even if just for one night?" She looked back at him, a deep calling within her was stirred. The spell was broken by a third voice.

"Well, I thought I might find you here Helgny. Jorn? Good to see you, future soldier." Aldis greeted them, shaking Jorn's hand.

"Really? When is this happening?" Helgny asked, looking at Jorn.

"Well, I'm graduating from the Bard's College in a fortnight. I've made no secret of my desire to join the Imperial Legion." Jorn said.

"While I'm remiss to say that anyone but a soldier is useful in the forces, your drumming will help the men with their drills and when going into battle." Aldis said, leaning his arm on the wall to Helgny's other side, effectively pinning her in on both sides. "I just hope when the fighting gets bad, you know how to handle a sword." Aldis teased.

"Oh, I'm very good with my sword," Jorn said, looking at Helgny, "I've never had any complaints. I have strong hands from drumming, so my technique is very good. Also, I believe in keeping the sheath very, very oiled." A slight grin spreading across his lips.

"Well yes," Aldis began, leaning in closer to Helgny, "most people neglect the sheath, but that's the most important part. Sure, a hard blade is essential, but after countless thrusts into the sheath, you want to make sure both are oiled. Makes the use much more sporting, much more enjoyable." Helgny couldn't help but grin at them.
