Date: 2014-04-08 11:20 pm (UTC)The Dragonborn chuckled and offered a small smile. “You have found my weakness, mum,” admitted the copper-haired woman as she shifted her son in her arms. “So many lovely pendants—though I think this little one might take too much of a liking to pulling on them.” She nodded down at her son, tugging the blanket a little snugger around him.
Fralia laughed and shook her head, delight filling her voice. “If I may, my lady? I haven’t held a newborn since I helped Carlotta deliver her daughter. May I hold him?”
The Dragonborn swallowed, glancing between the matriarch of the Gray-Manes and her son. Or, more precisely, the wife of the father of her child. Of course there was no way that could go badly, she thought sarcastically. Offering a falsely bright smile, she nodded. “But of course. I shouldn’t monopolize him,” she allowed as she carefully set her son in the older woman’s arms.
Fralia smiled down at the baby. Fair skin like his mother and the fuzz on his head had the same coppery cast. His eyes were blue—though a much lighter shade than his mother’s lapis gaze. Perhaps the father had eyes of that pale shade? “He is a handsome one, Thane. And so well-behaved…like my Thorald,” she whispered, her breath quickening as a tear slipped down her cheek.
The Dragonborn stepped closer, taking the baby from Fralia’s arms and handing him to Lydia before turning back to Fralia. Taking her by the arm, she led her away from the stall, hoping to give the older woman some privacy. “Fralia, whatever is the matter?”
Fralia smiled wanly at the younger woman and patted her cheek. “You’re such a nice girl. It’s my sons, Thane. My eldest has been taken by the Thalmor and my youngest—he jumps at every shadow thinking that he shall be next. I am losing my sons and I don’t know what to do.”
The Dragonborn frowned, glancing at the disapproving look on Lydia’s face before she met Fralia’s gaze again. “Fralia, what can I do to help?”
Lydia shook her head at her Thane, shifting the tiny boy against her chest. She needed to focus on her family, not the goings on in town. There would always be some sort of drama, Lydia knew. It was the nature of towns. But the Dragonborn had responsibilities—and one of them was the boy in Lydia’s arms.
Fralia’s smile warmed. “The Battle-Borns. They know something. Find proof that they know what happened to my Thorald and bring it to my house tonight.” She clasped the Dragonborn’s hands in hers and hurried back to her stand. “Remember, tonight.”
Lydia walked towards the Dragonborn, letting the younger woman take back her son. “What have you gotten yourself into now, my Thane?”
The Dragonborn sighed, offering a smile down at her son before she met Lydia’s troubled gaze. “More trouble. We’ll finish the shopping later.”
