Forfeit (part 5)

Date: 2014-04-21 12:36 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Seventeen days passed. Seventeen days of festering pain, delirium, nightmares, and stench. Seventeen days of nursing, bathing, praying, and spells. For seventeen days, Farkas hoped and prayed that he had made the right decision but it was beginning to look like any efforts that Janshir may have made would be too late.

On the eighteenth day, the courier arrived. He carried a small package, containing two vials, and a letter for Farkas.

Farkas,

I offer no guarantees. Give him the red potion first, then the yellow potion ten minutes later. They are not without side-effects, and if he is too weak, they may kill him. If he survives, he will be bedridden for some time.

If he does not survive, then Sithis will have his soul, and our agreement is void. If he lives, take a room at the Windpeak Inn in Dawnstar a week from this Sundas. I will find you.

Janshir.

Farkas gave the vials to Danica, and told her how they were to be administered. After all the effort he had put into keeping Vilkas alive, he could not bring himself to give him the potions that could potentially kill him. Cursing himself for a coward, he left the temple to pray at the shrine of Talos.

Half an hour later, he looked up to see Danica approaching beneath the Gildergreen.

He endured her approach, knuckles white, muscles tense.

“He asks for you,” Danica said, smiling.

“Ysmir. He lives.” Taking her hand, he brought her fingers to his lips, and kissed them. “Thank you for being braver than me. How much have you told him?”

“Very little. I figured that was your job.” Danica did not envy him this task.

“True. And I should get on with it.”

Entering the temple, he was surprised to see Vilkas sitting up, already eating. The acolytes had not given him much food for fear it would make him sick, and the mead had been watered down. He was gaunt, and looked half starved, but he would undoubtedly live.

“About time you woke up, lazy bugger. There are vermin that need killing in Solitude.” Farkas could not suppress a grin.

“Heh. I’m not even sure I can put on my own pants by myself yet. I tried standing, but I fell on my arse. How long have I been out?”

“Almost three weeks. All from one falmer arrow,” Farkas said.

“Talos! No wonder I’m hungry. And I haven’t thanked Danica properly for curing me.”

“About that. She didn’t. She and the others kept you alive, but we needed more help to find an antidote. I had to contact Janshir.”

“That would not have been easy, brother. Seeing him again after all this time.”

“No. And now I owe him a favour.” Farkas saw his brother’s questioning look. “No, I’m not off to join the brotherhood, or murder anyone, but I do need to leave soon to get it sorted. I’ll help you move back home before I go.”
