DB/Follower "But I have no need of sneaking!"
Date: 2013-07-14 01:23 pm (UTC)My DB is all about the stealth. Loves burglaries, prefers to reduce enemy numbers from a distance by arrow, likes to sneak into a tomb and sniff out potential hazards before tackling them. She tends to go it alone, most of the time, but sometimes she misses the camaraderie of having a Shield Brother or fellow Guild Member with her.
So she recruits someone to go dungeon delving, exploring Dwemer ruins, or just plain wandering around the Reach looking for a fight to pick with some Forsworn or bandits. And they haven't got the first clue about Sneaking. They break out their weapons/mage armour spells before the DB has located all the enemies, they alert the Spheres and Spiders to the presence of intruders, and gods dammit, they trigger the pressure plates in such a way that the DB gets hit with the swinging spiked door.
Give me crack, good Write Anons. Give me humour, and most of all give me your Dragonborn(s) facepalming as their well-meaning followers get them deeper into trouble than anticipated when they were hired.
Any gender and any race for DB (as long as they are exasperated I'm happy).
Any follower you like, (although I've been using Aela and Marcurio, and keep yelling at them to stop charging into battle before I'm ready)
If you want to go the smut route, my only squicks are of the consent variety.
SUPER EXTRA BONUS POINTS for the DB commenting on the follower's unsubtle approach and the follower taking it as a compliment :D

Re: DB/Follower "But I have no need of sneaking!"
Date: 2013-07-23 06:25 am (UTC)Re: Part 1
Date: 2013-07-23 06:30 am (UTC)Lendri never would have pictured himself working with a Stormcloak. For one thing, Stormcloaks in general were suspicious of elves. For another, the Stormcloak rebellion seemed awfully like an organized law system, and, growing up in a tribe of outlaws in Valenwood, Lendri generally considered laws to be more loose guidelines than anything else. He wasn't actually one of them; more an ally against the Thalmor. He didn't care what happened to the Empire or what Ulfric's quarrel with them was, as long as the Jarl was willing to point him in the direction of Thalmor who needed killing or investigating. Besides, not all of them were so bad. Ralof in particular had an endearingly naive amount of loyalty and honor, coupled with acceptance of anyone, human, mer, or beast, who he considered 'alright'. So when the Nord was assigned to help him (and, he suspected, keep an eye on him) during his forays against the Thalmor, he wasn't annoyed; in fact, he was happy with the arrangement. Back at home, he'd often hunted and explored the forest for months at a time with a good friend or two for help and companionship. Rainforests (and tundras, it was turning out) were sometimes strange places to be alone with nothing but your thoughts and imaginings for company.
***
Ahead of them loomed a small castle, hardly more than an outpost, really. Lendri was lying along on of the branches of a huge pine not far off. It was a bright day, the sun gleaming off the snow, the sky a high clean blue, the air so cold it was almost like a drink to breathe. He was confident no one would see him up here, and he took his time counting the targets. Their golden armor shone blindingly even at this distance.
So--two on the front walltop, but one turns away so if I kill the other, I can kill the first before he realizes what's happened. One at the gate. One in the tower. Probably someone in the yard--looks like a mage. Someone--looks like a Nord--coming up the path. Wait. That can't be.
It could. Ralof was fighting the guard at the gate, though he was smart enough at least to stand within cover of the gateway to avoid being hit by arrows from anyone above him. Lendri aimed for the archers on the walltops, who were already running for the stairs into the courtyard. It was a clean shot from this distance. The first fell, but the other only stumbled and kept running. It didn't seem like the arrow had managed to pierce his armor. The scrape and clash of metal and the shouts of fighting echoed out into the woods, scaring up little flocks of birds. The other guard in the tower was gone. Lendri scrambled down the tree, jumping the final few feet, counting the guards in his head. The one at the gate--plus the one in the tower--the one I didn't kill--the mage--and whoever's inside that might've heard. That stupid Nord, he's going to have more Thalmor than he knows what to do with pretty soon. Cursing, Lendri floundered through the snowdrifts and out onto the path. He shot the mage from there, glad the man wore only robes and no breastplate. More arrows at this range would only put Ralof at risk as well--he drew his knives and, against all his better judgement, rushed toward the battle.
It was over in a few more tense minutes, with no serious injuries on their side. Bright blood stained the snow. Lendri scanned the place for more Thalmor, and, when he saw nothing, turned to Ralof, who was grinning.
Re: Part 1 coninued
Date: 2013-07-23 06:32 am (UTC)Lendri glared up at him. "Ralof. I told you to wait. Listen, when you're traveling with me, do me a favor and don't do that 'victory or Sovngarde' stuff, alright?"
"Sure, sure. Let's see what's inside."
"What if hadn't hit that mage in time? You could've been killed!"
Ralof listened indulgently, like he was fielding the complaints of a child. "That risk is the glory of battle," he explained patiently. "Besides, we both came out of that in fine shape."
"What's the point in glory if you're dead? And what if next time you run in to some battle like a drunken mammoth, you end up getting killed? You have to wait, and plan."
"Heh, a drunken mammoth. That'd be funny. From a distance, anyway." Ralof went into the castle, and Lendri followed, fuming.
"I'm serious, you know."
Ralof turned around, smiling mischievously. "You spend a lot of time worrying about me, little elf."
Lendri sighed. It was clear the argument was a lost cause for now. "Oh, sod off."
They dispatched a few stray Thalmor on their way through the castle, with a lack of stealth Lendri found somewhat depressing. The real challenge was finding the papers. They were all written in Somerset-Ayleid, and Lendri only knew Valenwood-Ayleid. Ralof knew neither. The languages were similar enough that it wasn't impossible to find the right reports, but different enough that it would likely take the rest of the afternoon. Lendri started on the first drawer of papers, feet propped on the desk, while Ralof explored the castle, and, after and hour or so, returned to prowl around the room.
"You know, you could just take those home and look at them later," he commented at length.
Lendri didn't look up. "What, and end up carrying around a bunch of extra papers that might end up being some guardsman writing about what he had for lunch? No, it's best to find what we're looking for right here."
"It's going to get dark in a couple of hours."
"Clearly. What's your point?"
"There's a cave nearby that's supposed to be full of vampires. It wouldn't be smart to travel at night."
"So we'll stay the night in here."
"Lendri." Ralof stood across from him, for once not smiling. "They're going to smell all the blood from the battle and flock here like moths on a candle."
"But aren't they smart enough to know that the blood means everyone's dead?"
"They're animals," said Ralof, matter of factly. "They might dress like people and talk like em' too, but on the inside, they're animals. So we should get going. We can come back tomorrow."
"I think I've almost found the right one, though. And it's not like avoiding vampires is all that difficult. We had them back in Valenwood too. You just have to be careful and stay one step ahead of them. Or two, you know, if you're a nervous type."
Ralof sat on the edge of the desk and said nothing for a long time. Lendri had almost forgotten he was there by the time he spoke. "Wonder what it's like being a vampire. Musty be pretty awful. I wonder if you, you know, still know who you are."
Lendri added a few papers to the pile they were bringing along. "You know, some tribes back at home used to eat their fallen enemies. You'd never guess it to talk to them, though. Seemed like normal enough people to me."
"Have you..."
"Not really. My tribe wasn't very religious. It's not as common as the rest of the world seems to think." He added another sheaf of papers to the bunch on the table, then shrugged, bundled the remaining papers together, and put them in his pack. "Well, I think that's all of them. Let's get going before your vampires show up."
Re: Part 2
Date: 2013-07-23 06:33 am (UTC)"Talos preserve us," Ralof muttered, glancing into the inky blue shadows of the swiftly darkening woods. Lendri stopped and turned, and Ralof stopped just short of running into him. They were so close that Ralof noticed the thin line of green eyeliner around the elf's dark amber eyes. For an absurd moment, he thought the elf was about to kiss him. Instead he hissed,
'Speaking of Talos, that reminds me...I better not hear a single 'victory or Sovngarde' out of you or so help me I will start thinking about some way to inflict suffering on you. Understand?"
Ralof tried not to smile. He'll 'start thinking about it', eh. That's a threat so hollow you can hear the echoes. "Yeah, I understand."
(That's the first part. Ralof will ruin Lendri's fun when he's trying to sneak past the vampires next.)

Date: 2013-07-23 11:28 pm (UTC)OP here, I just wanted to say how perfect this is! Ralof's just so in character, happy to charge in in full death-or-glory mode, and teasing Lendri, and it's just what I needed! Thank you!
Really looking forward to seeing what happens with the vampires - oh, and I really liked Ralof wondering what vampirism is like. It's very him, and very bittersweet.
*gets comfy chair and waits patiently*
Re: Part 2 (finally continued)
Date: 2013-08-07 07:07 pm (UTC)Lendri freed the Nord's hand after a few moments, when he felt reasonably certain that there were no misplaced heroics looming on the horizon. The vampire was roving the clearing, occasionally pausing to lie in wait in the darkness. It's probably a trap. He's waiting for prey. Shooting him down was the work of a moment. The vampire practically crumbled, his body slipping bonelessly to the ground. Lendri waited a moment, to see if the death brought any reaction, and when it didn't, he gestured for Ralof to follow and darted across the clearing.
"That must've took a quarter of an hour," Ralof commented, once they were safe in the cover of the trees on the other side.
"Keep your voice down," Lendri whispered.
"It's going to take all night to make it out of here at this rate."
The elf seemed about to reply, but broke off immediately as something rustled in the distance off to the right. Silently they continued down the path.
Some time later, Lendri stopped, listening, eyes shut. Inwardly he could sense Ralof behind him, and the energy of the trees and animals all around, and something else, something wrong. Outwardly he could hear the Nord's breathing (Gods, he even *breathes* loud) a sigh of breeze, and the sound of sackcloth scraping against a pine branch. The animals were ominously silent.
Re: Part 2 (finally continued)
Date: 2013-08-07 07:09 pm (UTC)"It's keeping up with us," he said.
"Probably waiting for a good spot to ambush."
Lendri frowned. "Well, can't really be helped, I guess," he decided at last, and kept walking. "We'll just have to be on guard, and be careful not to run into any other vampires, because that could go bad really quick."
Ralof was momentarily rooted to the spot by the stupidity of the plan. It was difficult to wrap his head around the elf's logic. 'We think we're going to get ambushed, so let's just walk into it carefully?' He took a few deep breaths, because he really didn't think shouting was going to earn him any respect in the elf's book, and caught up to walk alongside his companion.
"The damn thing's right here. We know where it is. Why don't we just kill it now?" He jumped as the elf leaned in close to him, gripping his shoulder, and breathed in his ear,
"Because we're going to give it the slip."
Even barely audible, he could hear the exasperation in the elf's voice. Ralof took another breath, feeling his face heating up in spite of the cold, probably because he was angry, he thought. He ran a hand through his hair.
"But we can have done with it right here," he muttered.
"And probably attract the attention of every other vampire in the forest. Ralof, I said *no*." Lendri released his shoulder, stepped back and kept walking. Ralof stewed in silence for the next few minutes, and almost missed when Lendri left the pathway and turned off into the forest. He rushed to catch up, stumbled over a log that had been hidden under the snow and swore as he crashed through a snowberry bush, the serrated leaves scratching his arms.
Lendri rushed back and dragged him to his feet. "Great, you're bleeding."
They didn't get to say anything else. The brief delay was all the vampire had needed; it loomed out of the shadows, tall, inhumanly so, so much so that it must have been an Altmer. The gold skin had paled to the color of old parchment. Gray lips peeled back in the mockery of a smile.
"Run," said Lendri, grabbing Ralof's wrist and taking off into the trees.
We should stand and fight, Ralof thought. This is stupid. But he couldn't very well stop and argue the point. Luckily, the vampire seemed to be impeded by the long dark robes it wore, and they managed to outdistance it after a few minutes. Hidden behind the outcropping of rock, Ralof promised himself that the very next vampire he saw was going to get killed, stealth be damned.
"Great, now you're bleeding. Leaving you here, is what would be the best choice and learn at you the most lessons. You're the person of the most stupidity that I know! When in the forest it has to be that you turn yourself into a secret."
Ralof tried not to smile, because he knew it would only make things worse, but he found it funny how Lendri seemed to forget Nordic grammar whenever he got really angry. "I'm sorry. Hey, at least I didn't yell victory or Sovngarde."
"This isn't the joke that you make it! Leaving you here is what I should do." Lendri stood, pulling Ralof up with him, and the two continued on into the darkness. By now they were getting close to the forest's edge. Through the thick trunks they could see the bright blue white of the moon gleaming off the broad, smooth snowfields.
Only another small clearing stood between them and the safety of open ground; and in it stood four vampires, crowded around the body of a hunter. His blood steamed on the cold air.
Re: Part 2 (finally continued)
Date: 2013-08-07 07:11 pm (UTC)"Look, he's a Bosmer, isn't he? So is this one."
"The one we're after has some great heifer of a Nord stumbling along behind him."
"Maybe they got split up."
"I really don't think this is him."
Lendri tugged Ralof's arm in the direction of the snowfields, but the Nord wasn't going to have it. "They killed some innocent hunter," he whispered, under cover of the vampires' bickering. "We must avenge him!"
"He's already dead. Killing the vampires won't shange that! We can come back and give him funeral rites tomorrow if it will make you feel better."
But Ralof had already drawn his axe. He shrugged away the elf's hand and rushed the nearest vampire, cleaving into the back of the nearest one before the other three could even react. The remaining vampires spread out immediately, forcing Ralof to turn his back to at least one of them. He charged the one foolish enough to use a frostbite spell on a Nord; the knife it desperately drew as he got closer was no match for an axe. Behind him he could hear the whirr of an arrow and the thump of a body flopping down into the snow; Lendri must've decided to help him.
He decapitated the vampire with the knife, leaving a bright arc of blood on the snow, then turned to see the elf battling the master vampire, fending off knife blows while the vampire slowly drained his life, the spell lighting the clearing with an eerie red glow. Ralof's heart jumped in fear. The haft of the axe was slippery with blood as he crossed the clearing a few quick bounds. The vampire spotted him then and immediately broke off, turning invisible. Footprints stamped on the snow, streaking toward the forest.
The elf stumbled back several steps. "He was pulling my blood out through my skin," he said, a little dazed.
"He didn't--you're not a vampire now, are you?"
"I don't think so."
"Yeah, good...damn, Lendri, that could've been...I didn't think this would happen."
"You should've just stopped at 'I didn't think'. Come on. There's a hunter's cabin not far from here."
"They'll let you stay there?"
"Yeah. All the hunters know eachother. Besides, there might not even be anyone there tonight."
The camp was indeed abandoned--it didn't look like anyone had been there for a while. Ralof was secretly relieved. He hadn't relished the thought of arriving at the camp and finding something that might have belonged to that poor unlucky hunter the vampires had slain. They ate roast rabbit for dinner, and niether of them spoke throughout the meal. In fact, they were on their bedrolls, and Ralof was facing away from the fire, half trying to fall asleep, by the time the silence was broken.
"Hey, Ralof."
The Nord turned. On the other side of the fire he could see the elf, propped up on one elbow, watching him intently. The flames made his eyes gleam strangely.
"Yeah?"
"You know I didn't mean it, about leaving you in the woods, right?"
"Of course. You know you'd never get anything done without me."
"Things are gonna start to chafe if you keep stroking your ego like that."
"Yeah, yeah. See you in the morning."
(I might leave it here, but I do have plans for a short epilogue in which Lendri tries to use examples a Nord would understand to make Ralof understand the importance of sneaking.)

Love Traps
(hehehe sorry, I got no idea what to name this)
There are times in Serana's life nowadays that she would love to turn into a bat and fly away from frustrating situations. Unfortunately there is no way she could turn into a bat, let alone fly away from frustrating situations, especially when they involve a favor owed to the Dragonborn.
The bestest of the friends she’s ever had asked her to get Farkas, a Companion that was freakishly tall and muscular, away from Jorrvaskr and into a cave to find some horn. Said best friend in the world suggested to her that this brute would be perfect for the mission she was currently undertaking, but Serana would love to differ. There is nothing wrong with his abilities to fight off and kill the enemy, no. The problem is, Serana would very much like to do a quiet, fast and meticulous job when dealing with her enemies. Farkas, on the other hand, wants to charge like an idiot into battle without even realizing who he’s fighting with. Or how many. Or... how.
“I think I heard someone ahead.” Said man spoke, stretching his arm in front of Serana’s face.
“So help me if you walk ahead of me one more time, I’ll find a way to make you cry.” Pushing the big, muscular arm away, the raven-haired woman kept walking slowly and carefully. The cave was filled with crazy-ass draugr, after all.
“Or you could just ask me. Spiders make me cry.”
The woman turned her head and stared at him in wonder. She wondered if he was unaware of the graveness of the situation. The Dragonborn assigned this task to her because it was urgent and wanted it done fast. They had no time to waste.
“Anyway, I will ask you - AGAIN - to be careful where you walk.” Going into a passage, Serana opened flame on her hand to see ahead and both stumbled upon a room.
“Oh great, an open room.”
And right before Serana walked into the room, Farkas gently moved her aside and stepped in, igniting the whole area where he stood. As the flames went up and started to get big, the Nord man moved as quick as he could with his heavy armor to the edge of the traps, next to the rocky walls.
Serana had jumped back and fallen to the floor, scraping her knees as she landed on loose rocks. Being human again made her skin very sensitive to touch.
“I JUST told you—”
“OH NO! No, no, no!” Turning around, the raven-haired woman saw two big, hairy and stinky spiders approach the Nord man fast. He was frozen in place.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Standing up as fast as she could, Serana jumped into action and pulled her dagger out, charging for one of the spiders. She wasn’t as heavy as Farkas, so the fire took more seconds to ignite, giving her enough time to stab the disgusting creature multiple times before she had to jump to the edges of the traps. She wasn’t so lucky, her boots got really hot and her feet suffered the same fate. “Farkas, do something!”
The second spider jumped up and landed in front of Serana. Said woman took the opportunity and stabbed the thing as many times as she could before the Nord man snapped out of his—fear—and slashed the thing in two. Moments later, he ran to the other one and did the same thing.
Love Traps 2/2
Date: 2013-08-02 01:29 am (UTC)“I’ll get you to the other side.” Because she didn’t have another option, her hands grabbed a hold of her shoulders and his hands held onto her thighs, pushing her up until she was in a comfortable position even with his big-ass sword in between them.
The fire started coming up and she could feel the heat on her feet, then she wondered how Farkas was able to stand it.
Once they were on the other side, she dropped herself on the floor and took her boots off rapidly. The bottom of her feet were red, but other than that she suffered nothing more.
“Look, there’s a door.” She turned to where the brute was pointing at and tried to stand up, but failed miserably. “Let me help you.”
He picked her up in his arms and continued on with the next room. Serana’s cheeks turned red as she was being held protectively.
“Please watch out—” Before she could be finished, a very familiar crunch was heard from underneath them, letting them know something horrible was about to happen.
They had no time to react as a huge tree trunk swung their way, pushing them both into a pool of water. Very cold water. Coming to the surface, big Nordic dragon carvings started to float out of the water, urging them to get out.
As Serana sat there contemplating on what just happened, a small laugh escaped her mouth.
“What?” The Nord man asked, pushing his long hair out of his face.
“I swear, you just have to walk into a room and all the freaking traps unlock at your sight.”
“Thanks.” Rolling her eyes, the raven-haired woman slowly stood up and when Farkas tried to hold her up again, she shook her head.
“I’ll take it from here, dummy.” Walking along the bridge between two pools of water and the carvings, Serana got to the end of the room, facing a pedestal that held—
“A letter!?” Pulling it off the pedestal, she opened it and read its contents.
“What does it say?” Farkas asked from behind her, trying to catch a glimpse of the words.
“I’m going to kill her.” The raven-haired woman whispered.
“Who?” The man was curious as to why the room suddenly felt heavy and dark.
“The beloved Dragonborn.”
