"Ulfric... is my father!?"

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've played Skyrim with my Dragonborn, and Imperial girl, and lately (the last 2 times I started a game) I decided to twist my gameplay up and pretend she's... Ulfric's lost daughter.

I love Ulfric, and I love the fact that I make this crazy ass novelas in my head every time I play, so I want to see anyone else's take on it. I might even self-fill if I have the time.

-Give me juice! I want feelings, back story, drama!
-I want him to want to be there for the DB now that he knows.
-Don't know how they find out, but you may come up with any idea you want to use.
-A young DB, maybe late teens (17-19) to mid twenties (20-24) so it fits with Ulfric's age LOL
-Did I mention drama? Tears(happy/sad), hugs, kisses, :D

In ES lore (if I seem to remember correctly) the child takes physically the mother's race, so that's why she's an Imperial.

What does he think of his child? An Imperial! AND the Dragonborn! DB may or may not be on either side of the war. If you want to avoid that issue completely, it's fine with me :)

Technically, this is a kink meme and I should be listing a kink, but I guess I want to see something dramatic but sweet... I hope someone takes it upon themselves to fill it! Thank you!

Seconded! This sounds like some amazing material could come out of it!

OP forgot to mention can be M/F DB :)

Male or female is fine! Sorry!!! I play my game as a girl, but it can totally be a guy if you choose.

I really like this prompt, but I've too many obligations to have time to do it justice. Wholeheartedly seconded (and once I finish my current open fills (of which there are many) I may come back and have a bash at this).

Death and Madness on DA has somethimg like this but the Dragonborn is in her late twenties and almost thirty.

I've got an idea brewing for this. How would OP feel about a dunmer DB? Admittedly I'd be handwaving the age issue by saying her Nord blood caused her to age more quickly than most elves. (Racial Phylogeny does say some traits of the father can show up...)

A!A, this OP is totally okay with that! :D

I apologize in advance for any mistakes I might have made, I try to keep it as best as I can, but sometimes errors sneak by.

The pitter-patter sound from the rain falling was lulling the Imperial to sleep. Her eyelids were getting heavy and the yawning was unstoppable. But she knew there was no time to sleep right now, not when she was very close to finding her father.

As she wrote on the piece of paper sitting on the wooden table, her mind took her to the fate-changing event that happened two days ago.

Thales, Brynjolf and Serana had just gotten back from defeating the latter woman’s father, and had been so exhausted she asked them stop at the Companion’s mead hall to recover. Thales' body had in fact giving up after leaving the castle, that she doesn’t remember exactly what happened, but she does remember a conversation she had with one of the Divines while she was out.

Mara had thanked her for saving the people of Skyrim and possibly the rest of Tamriel, and then the goddess hinted to her to visit Dinya. The woman was a priest residing in the Temple of Mara in Riften, and that’s where they were going to be headed next. The reason this was a fate-changing event is because the goddess told her it was directly related to her lifelong quest.

Thales hasn’t been doing anything but trying her best to find her father.

Her mother, an Imperial pirate, passed away back when she was just a baby. Having grown up in the Gold Coast around everything possibly considered bad for a child, Thales matured into the strong young woman she is today.

Even though she doesn’t remember her mother, the kind captain that took her in always told her stories about her. From the crazy rabbles she would get into in Anvil, to the far away places she had been to with the help of her beautiful ship.

Her heart sunk at the thought of her late mother, and how she used to daydream of traveling with her, fighting bandits along her, and even celebrating another victory besides her.

The captain that helped raise her also told her of the Nord man that was her father. Thales' mother never mentioned his name, but according to the man she did say he lived in Skyrim. So ever since the captain died away in the sea, Thales made it her lifelong quest to find her father. If he was even alive.

“You’re still here?” The Nord startled her as he spoke. The Imperial turned around and met Vilkas’ scowl of disgust. She wasn’t feeling up to a verbal fight with the man thought.

Despite his decision to interrupt what she was doing, he didn’t step inside Kodlak’s old room.

“Yes Vilkas, I’m still here. Do you have a problem with that?” She knew the attitude wasn’t going to help her case, but the man was starting to irritate her. They were such good friends not too long ago, but ever since she rejected the title of Harbinger his actions grew colder by the day.

“Actually, yes. This is not an Inn.” His grey eyes flickered to the closed door leading to the bedroom then back to her.

“I’m well aware of that, I used to live here after all.” She turned back to the letter she was writing before she lost herself reminiscing.

“That’s right, you used to. I don’t understand why you come in here as you like and not only with a disgusting thief behind you, but a damn vampire too.” This comment did it. Anger in her flared up along with confusion about his attitude towards her.

“What is your damn problem, Vilkas!?” Her hands slammed on the table and her body was pushed off the chair.

The older man didn’t even wait for a second before answering. “My problem is that you still think you’re welcome here.” His words were venomous and they were a slap in the face.

“Very well.” Brushing some of her red hair behind her ear, the Imperial started putting her personal items inside her knapsack. She left the letter and the quill she was writing with on the table thought. “You want me gone, then I’ll go.”

She went into the bedroom where her friends were resting only to find them fully dressed and with their own knapsacks on their backs. “We kind of heard what you two were arguing about. We’re ready when you are.” The raven-haired woman spoke, pointing at their readiness.

“I’m sorry lass.” The thief smiled at her apologetically, and it made her shake her head.

“You don’t need to apologize for anything, Bryn, I’m the one that’s sorry. Let’s go guys.” As they all came out together, Thales noticed the Companion was still standing by the door.

Walking towards the table, Thales grabbed the quill and quickly finished writing the letter, folding it in four once she was done.

“This is the last thing you’ll do for me and I promise you won’t see me again.” She shoved the folded letter on his hands and he frowned at the action. “Give it to Farkas, and tell him it’s your fault we didn’t get to say farewell face to face.”

With that said, the Imperial walked out of the mead hall along with her friends towards The Bannered Mare. She hoped both Brynjolf and Serana could catch a couple of hours more of sleep before heading off to Riften in the morning.

The bitterness of her farewell with Vilkas wasn’t going to let her sleep, she knew. She also knew that the Nord’s attitude towards her was a reflection of what he was feeling inside, and it made her sad. The reason he’s like that is because of her and her inability to think of anyone else besides herself. But this was her life and if there is anything she’s learned that could be useful right about now would be that in life you gain some and you lose some.

Ah, I hope everyone liked it! :)

THALES ~ 2

The trio were almost at Riften, sitting on the back of a carriage.Thales still felt a tad bit embarrassed from what went on in Jorrvaskr, and the conversation going on at the moment between her and her two friends wasn’t helping at all.

“What kind of man talks to a woman like that. I’m sorry lass, but he needs to learn some manners.” The fact that this came from the biggest thief she knows almost made her laugh, but the irony was justified. Brynjolf is a gentleman all in all.

“He is very handsome, is he the one you have feelings for?” Serana smiled at her blush, making Thales turn her head away. Her green eyes looking at anything but the two people sitting with her.

“Divines no.” She was lying, but they didn’t need to know that, not after the way he treated her when they were listening.

“Does he even know you’re the Dragonborn? I would be afraid of being shouted to death if I ever talked to you that way.” Rolling her eyes at the older redhead, Thales felt like a sack of rotten apples at the moment. Why must everything be so complicated? She didn’t want to talk about this anymore.

“Hey, Serana, how are you holding up?” Changing the topic wasn’t hard and since her friend was going through something painful at the moment and this would distract them all from Vilkas.

“As good as anyone would. I mean, he... well, there isn’t much I can say about this.” The raven-haired woman bent her head down, covering her whole face behind the shadows her dark hood made. “I’d rather not talk about it.”

“Ah, ladies, we’re here.” Getting up, Brynjolf got off the carriage then grabbed both their hands to help them jump off. Not that they needed help, but she knows he does it out of politeness.

The three of them made their way into the city then to the back of the Temple of Mara, where they stood hoping to come up with a plan of some sort.

“I rather go at this on my own, because I’m sure you’re tired,” She pointed at the thief, “and you’ve gone through enough emotional shit to last you a long time.” She then pointed at the vampire.

“We can wait for yo—” He got interrupted by the raven-haired woman raising her hand for him to stop.

“No, if Thales wanted us to go along with her she wouldn’t make up excuses for us.” With a smile, she turned to the Imperial and hugged her tightly. “You know we’re here for you, but I can understand your decision of going at this alone.”

“All you have to do is send out word for us and we’ll be there.” The older redhead pipped in while crossing his arms across his chest.

“Are you going to stay here with the Guild, Serana?” She was curious as to where her friend will pick to stay at. She doubted the woman wanted to go back to her home, especially now that they pretty much killed everyone that lived there with her now dead father.

“I think I’m going to rest here for a day or two, then I’m going to get my mother from the Soul Cairn. Now that my father is gone, she will be able to live here without fearing for her life. I’ll come back here though.”

Thales’ skin tingled at the name of that horrid place filled with confused souls.

“Okay then, I’ll fill you guys in if I discover anything exciting.”

The air was musty but the familiar smell of damp rock and metal made her feel right at home. The older redhead was hunched over the Guild Master’s desk looking through some papers when she decided to interrupt him. His eyes lit up the moment he saw it was her.

“Lass, what are you doing here so soon? Did you find what you were looking for?” He winked at her and folded the papers to shove them in a small box.

Nodding her head enthusiastically, Thales grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the edge of the pool in the middle of the big room. Both took a seat as Brynjolf laughed, she was giddy and excited and he couldn’t complain about that.

“Mara sent me to the Greybeards, who then told me… Brynjolf, hear this, they told me Ulfric might know who my father is.” Thales’ smile widened at the surprise written on his face.

“You’re joking. The Ulfric? Ulfric Stormcloak?” She nodded at his question and then slumped her shoulders.

“Which brought me to you. I need a plan, I can’t just walk up to him and ask him if he knows who my father is.”

“What if he is your father?” The older man asked with a serious tone. The Imperial remembers Arngeir implying the same thing, but there was no way. He was so old, and he’s done some bad things that Thales doesn’t agree with. Plus, she knows that if he was her father, she would have felt it the day they were sitting side by side on the way to be beheaded.

Isn’t that what children feel with their parents, a special bond? Thales refused to believe that, she knows Mara and the way the Divine works is on teaching you a lesson. That’s the reason behind Thales having to run around asking people for clues. Without Mara’s help, the Imperial wouldn’t have known where to start.

So Thales shook her head and pinched Brynjolf’s cheeks rougher than she intended to.

“All you need to worry about is figuring out a plan for me to get close to him.” Letting go of his face, the older man rubbed the pinched skin and frowned at her.

“Watch your strenght.” Placing his elbows on the top of his tights, Brynjolf bent forwards and stared at the water for a couple of minutes. The Imperial was patient, looking around and spotting Sapphire eating some fruit while talking to Garthar. “I got it.” The redhead turned to look at her smirking.

“Okay, what is it?” She was anxious to hear, his plans are usually fun but they tend to be somewhat dangerous even if he doesn’t want them to be.

“Oh, you’ll love it. What you need to do is join his army. You’re so strong and skilled you’ll run up his ranks until you can be alone with him. It’s a long process but it’s sure to forge some sort of camaraderie between you two. He’ll be sure to share any information he has about your father without a doubt.” The man opened up his arms towards her, waiting to get a hug but Thales just stared at him with a frown.

THALES ~ 5b

(Anonymous) 2013-11-14 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
“Bryn, I love you and all but I was hoping for a much faster and efficient way of getting to him. That plan is probably going to take months, maybe years!”

“Oh, I got one but I don’t think you want to hear it.” His eyes hardened at her insult to his elaborative and in fact efficient plan.

“Try me.” She challenged him, so he bent forward to whisper in her ear.

“Tell him you’re the Dragonborn and that you want to speak with him. That sure would get him to talk, and quick.” He straightened his torso to stare back at her. His smugness irritated her a little but he was right.

“I can’t reveal to anyone who I am and you know perfectly well why, you idiot.” Thales whispered back, a frown adorning her features.

“Hey, I’m just the plan maker. Those are the two that I can come up with that will get him to either trust you or fear you. You could try and sneak into his bedroom when he’s inside the palace, that sure would work on getting you close to him, don’t know about the telling part.”

Shaking her head, Thales crossed her arms across her bosom and stared into the water pensively. There had to be an easy way, right? It was just a question after all. It’s not like the redhead thinks life is easy; one thing she has clear on her mind is that there isn’t any easy way but this is about her father and she had hoped—

“Do you know anyone that’s close to him? Surely you do with the whole Dragonborn dilemma and all that.” Brynjolf stared at her as her mind worked around all the people she’s got to meet in Skyrim ever since getting here. And he was right, there was someone.

“Yes, his name is Ralof, but by now he’s probably back in the army with the rest of his men. Ugh, I guess I’ll have to go to Windhelm and see which plan works best.” Wrinkling her nose in distaste, Thales stood up along with the Nord and groaned. “The worst part is that I can’t just go and join the freaking army, I have to protect Skyrim from the dragon attacks.”

“You could, you’ll just have to hope dragons don’t attack during a mission with the army.”

“And we both know how convenient it is for them to attack when I’m busy…”

Both stood facing each other, without saying anything else. It was comfortable silence, the kind of comfort that is born from deep trust, one Thales has never experienced before Brynjolf.

“I wish you could come with me,” the Imperial looked up at the older man’s face and gave him a sad smile, “but I know you have to stay here and take care of business.”

The Nord smiled back and engulfed her in a tight hug, something they don’t do quite often but is warmly welcomed when it happens.

“Lass, you’ll be fine on your own. Besides, you can run back here anytime you need more hugs.” He let Thales go and the Imperial decided to get things ready for her trip to Windhelm.

Thales needs to get it together and remember that her whole life has been her and her shadow. Going off into this ‘mission’ all alone is nothing new nor something she isn’t more than used to. Yet, lately she’s had Serana by her side and Brynjolf as well, accompanying her on adventures and having someone to worry about and care for.

It wasn’t a crime to become fond of friendship, of trust. Lately she wishes it were.

It hadn’t been that long after meeting Vilkas that Thales knew she was going to hate the man. He was handsome, strong and incredibly intelligent, but his presumptuousness and lack of tact was something that overshadowed those dreamy traits. He had assumed she was there for some hidden reason, that she held a desire to hurt him and his ‘family’.

The Nord had been rude, brash and overall a horrible person to her. Only at the beginning though, eventually he had to accept the fact that she was a strong woman and that she could be molded into the perfect warrior. It made his eyes twinkle in delight. He, after all, basked in the glory of his prowess. So Thales accepted his mentoring, his private and very harsh training. The way he would permanently wrinkle his eyebrows in wonder, the way he would pat her back gently after she memorized the best ways to defeat the enemy made it hard for the Imperial to refuse no matter how straining and demanding his words were.

It became some sort of addiction to her, to be the focus point of the older Nord. She eventually found out he was much more than what he let on to others. He liked sweets, warm, homemade sweetrolls specifically. That one was one hilarious find. Thales also found out he treasured his twin brother and friends more than his own life, willing to throw himself in front of the enemy to protect them, to protect her countless of times.

And one night she also found out he liked to read. For seven days Thales kept running into him on cold, lonely nights, a book on hand and comfortable yet warm clothing on his body. Vilkas didn’t push her away. In fact, he had welcomed her, reading to her, telling her of many stories about the Companions, the Nords, their culture, other cultures. It had shifted something inside of her. Something deep within the depths of her soul, a sentiment she had always kept buried. His passion did that to her, he was a private and a very passionate man. He held passion for knowledge, wisdom and power.

To some point Vilkas became an idea in her head. As days went by and their strange but warm friendship forged, Thales couldn’t help but wonder. Would he still be friends with her if he knew she had the soul of a dragon? Of course he would, he wasn’t like the others. If there was one person in this sick and dark world she could lean on, it would be Vilkas. To some point, Vilkas became a rock, a pillar to her. He became the warm, fatherly figure she always yearned to have, the one person she could show weakness to and not worry about pretenses. And in some ways, she knows, she became the same to him.

And then Kodlak died, and they ran back and forth trying to escape the webs of hatred and revenge they tangled themselves into. She killed, she collected, and Vilkas patted her back.

He had thrown himself in his private quarters for days to no end. He had thrown himself at all missions, any missions just to get away, to dull the pain of losing his warm, fatherly figure. The day she noticed a different, dimming twinkle in his eyes was the day he asked her to save his soul. To accompany him in the most acrimonious and intimate mission that could come between them. And Thales accepted, the guilt of dirtying Kodlak’s legacy, of rejecting his dying wish urging her to accept and kill, and collect. Yet, there had not been Vilkas to pat her back that last time.

They exchanged heated words, words of hatred and words that pierced straight in the heart. Words that as time went by, both began to regret. Because Thales knew she shouldn’t have touched that part of Vilkas he only showed to her, and Vilkas knew what made her eyes water in fear anytime they were alone.

The day they parted ways, both experienced heartache, but not for the first time.

So shoving the letter Farkas wrote back to her in her pack, asking her to reconcile with Vilkas, was the best option for now. She had more important things to worry about, like finding her father and deciding which way would be the fastest. Later she would find the time to write him back.

So, this prompt has been swimming around my head since it was first posted, but I never wrote anything for it. Recently, I bought the PC version of the game during the Steam sale, and I decided spur-of-the-moment to make an Imperial character with this build in mind. I'm having so much fun pretending my character is Ulfric's illegitimate daughter and making up father/daughter dialogue for the two. Playing through the Civil War quests was so much more fun because I was imagining my DB trying so very hard to prove herself to her father. I really want to write something for this if I get the time, but I'm not making any promises. Really, I'm just posting this to thank OP for the idea that turned out to be so much fun to play :P

OP/A!A, YOU ARE WELCOME XDDD jk, but no, I'm glad your play-through turned out to be so much fun ♥ That's what happened with me, and ever since then my DB's are illegitimate children of Ulfric :P so play away and have fun! And if you ever feel inspired, BY ALL MEANS SHARE IT WITH US♥♥♥

It was odd, the feeling of your head wanting to explode as his brain pounded inside like a drum. He opened his eyes with slow flutter of eyelashes, and when all he saw was blackness, Vilkas immediately sat up and rubbed at them furiously.

“Stop that!” Someone shouted from somewhere far, but clearly in the same room. “If you wish to truly lose your sight, by all means continue.” And Vilkas’ pounding brain immediately recognized the accent.

With a scowl, the Companion touched around and noticed he was currently sitting on a bed. “What did you do to me?” There was no hostility in his tone, but he wasn’t going to go around letting the annoying redhead think he’s okay with being blinded and in the same room as him.

Scoffing, the thief moved around and when he spoke, Vilkas knew he had moved closer. “I didn’t need to do anything, you did this to yourself all on your own.” He felt fingers grab at a bandage on his neck and instantly flinched back, but then relaxed when nothing else happened. “You ran into poisoned spikes. The blindness itself will fade in a couple of hours, but your body will remain weak until the poison runs out of your system.”

Vilkas didn’t say anything and let the thief work on his bandages around his neck. Then his fingers moved to bandages on his shoulder as well. The time passed with both not uttering a single word until the raven-haired man couldn’t keep his curiosity down.

“How come you’re tending to my wounds. I would think you’d want me to drop dead more than anything.”

The fingers working on his shoulder paused for a brief moment before continuing, then the redhead chuckled softly by his ear. “You are correct, lad. But as much as I would find it satisfying for you to drop dead, Thales would kill me right after knowing I let it happen. I don’t know about you,” the thief patted his injured shoulder, making him wince, “but I would not want to be the target of her ferocious temper.”

Vilkas felt weak, his body ached, and at this point he honestly didn’t care about anything, so instead of scowling as he usually does, he laughed at the words of the other man.

“I’m also surprised you can laugh.” The redhead laughed at his own joke and Vilkas smiled without knowing whether the thief was looking at him or not.

“I’m one of the best warriors the Companions have right now, yet I was so—” desperate to find Thales, he though, “sick of this place, I didn’t see the ball of spikes in front of me.”

“Yeah, well, unfortunately for me you’re stuck here until your vision is back. You think I’m joking when I say Thales would kill me if anything happens to you here.” Vilkas laughed at his comment, and shook his head gently, trying not to aggravate his headache.

“Aye, I don’t disagree with you at all. That woman is a little crazy.”

"Crazy is a big understatement." They fell into more comfortable silence, neither knowing what to say without insulting each other.

Once the other man was done with the bandages, he offered a drink or food, but Vilkas declined due to a weird ache in his stomach. He’s never been poisoned before in his life, at least not this way. He’s fought frostbites, and the poison on those is hurtful, but not this dangerous.

“You know, I’m surprised you were able to find us. Not many outsiders know how to get here.” The voice sounded further away, but still in the same room, like when he first woke up.

“Wasn’t so difficult,” Vilkas lied, “besides, I’m in a hurry. I need to speak with Thales as soon as possible.”

“Well, like I said lad, she’s not here. And I can’t tell you where she, at least not unless she allows me to. And if I remember correctly, you made it clear she was not to see you again.”

The Companion didn’t respond, fighting with himself internally whether he should tell the thief the real reason behind his quest to find Thales.

“That’s none of your concern—”

“I beg to differ. Anything regarding my Guild Master is very much my concern.”

“Guild Master?” The confusion was apparent in his tone. He knows Thales has been keeping plenty of secrets from him, he can feel it. “Since when is she your Guild Master?”

Vilkas could hear soft shuffling of feet, almost as if the thief were pacing and wondering whether he should answer the question or not. It made his stomach sink with worry. The reason Thales didn’t accept the position as Harbinger had been these people, the redhead specifically. And as much as he was blinded by fury from her rejection, it was planting in him a seed of sadness to know she had been more involved in the thievery than she let on.

“Months.”

The urge to scream at him surged from within, but it went away as fast as it came. He wants to ask why would they let a nineteen year old lead an organization, what kind of dangerous things has she been through to manage it, but he can’t. And he won’t under the pretense of not being a hypocrite.

This man was being more honest with him than Thales herself has been for the whole time they’ve known each other.

Inside Vilkas' hazy thoughts, there didn't seem to be another option other than to be just as honest with the man.

This is a short chapter, but incredibly meaningful to the plot lines of Thales' relationship with Vilkas. :) Sorry for the long wait! Next time I'll have for you guys a picture of Thales so y'all can see her for the first time! AND Next chapter is the awaited meeting between Thales and Ulfric. See you then! :)

There aren’t many people Thales has ever wanted to meet again. In fact, the few people she likes enough to actually keep contact with could be counted with the fingers on her hands. One of them being the handsome and tall blond standing in front of her with a wide, toothy smile. Ralof had helped her the day they were going to be beheaded along with Ulfric, and seeing him healthy, tall and strong made her heart flutter in happiness. He was, after all, a very beautiful person inside and out.

“I still can’t believe you want to join us. I remember you getting upset at me for even suggesting it to you.” Ralof was standing in front of them by a desk inside a private room at the back of the Palace of the Kings.

“Well, I can certainly tell you that a lot has happened since I last saw you. Let’s just say most of those things have made me change my mind about a lot of things. But a captain? Geez, Ralof, you moved up fast.” Thales smiled back at him while they waited for him to write some information from them in a book that sat amongst others alike.

“Yeah, Ulfric promoted me as soon as I came back from Riverwood. I think you can imagine why.”

“He helped me and other soldiers escape Helgen during a dragon attack when I first came to Skyrim.” Thales turned to Sapphire and then pointed at Ralof. “It was brutal but this brave man was able to keep his head cool the whole time.”

“Child’s play.” Ralof winked at them and then handed them a piece of paper each. Sapphire stared at the blond a little longer than necessary before both started doing what they were asked to do. They had to write some personal information on it regarding their physical bodies, in case they die in battle and have to be recognize.

“Is Ulfric here?” The redhead casually asked, giving back the pieces of paper to the blond before smiling up at him again. She was hoping with all her being at this point.

“He is. We just came back from a camp two days ago.”

“Ah, while you were in jai—”

“Could I speak with him?” Thales interrupted her friend and sent her a cautionary look. There was a possibility that this could all crash and burn if they found out about her being framed for murder here in this city. Not because of the murder itself, but because she was an Imperial.

THALES ~ 15

Thales couldn’t have made it more awkward. Why did she cry? Now Ulfric is pacing behind the chair he’s supposed to be sitting on as she stares after him. So it was emotional, for her, maybe for him too, but why did she cry? They’ve been in silence for long, and it’s making her nervous. Maybe he’s trying to put everything in its place inside his head. But if that’s the case, how would he react when he knows that she is keeping a bigger secret (and a crazy one at that).

Now that’s going to be hard. Break it to him that his daughter is not only here, but she happens to be the Dragonborn as well.

“I’m at a loss.” His baritone voice snapped her out of thought. Him feeling that way is understandable.

“I’m still not expecting anything. I am an adult now, and just like you have your battles, I have mine.”

There was no runaround, she needs to get it all on the table and from there decide whether this is worth pursuing or not. Now that she has met her goal, her head is clear and she is able to think things carefully. Not that she couldn’t before, but when she was still chasing him, it always felt as if a veil was constantly in front of her eyes.

“Then let me help you with that. In any way I—”

“You can’t. No one can, it’s a complicated matter.” She started to fidget as she sat while he looked down on her. She noticed his yaw tense and his eyebrows raise.

“Let’s talk about each other then.” He finally decided to sit, and it certainly calmed her down. At least he didn’t seem like an anxious animal in a cage anymore. “I was never a bad man to your mother.”

“I know, the person who cared for me after she died only had good things to say about you. Or at least that’s what my mother told him.”

Chuckling, Ulfric turned away and stared somewhere to the side. “I wanted to marry her, but she threw me aside for a boat and the sea.”

She sighed and shifted her feet. “I think she regretted that. According to the captain, she never stopped talking about you.”

“Sometimes others do things that make no sense to us, but they sure have a good reason for doing them.”

They fell into a comfortable silence, both enjoying each other’s presence for the first time in their lives. She would hate to break such moment with him, but some things have to get done.

“I do regret to inform you that I cannot longer be in the ranks of the Stormcloaks. This includes Sapphire.”

“Why is that?” His questions came out faster than she thought it would. It made her wonder if he foresaw this happening.

“I…” She took a second to compose in her mind what she wanted to say. “It’s a shame that we meet under this circumstances, and I can’t begin to fathom why of all the time in my life it is now that I finally have my father. But as I said, we all have our battles to fight. And I’m not speaking figuratively. The task I must see to the end was something bestowed upon me, and I have no option but to carry it through.”

“I’m the Dragonborn and I must carry out my duty as such.”

The fire burning in the pit by them cackled as the light and shadows danced about their faces. Ulfric was as silent as a mouse, and Thales no longer felt nervous, or scared, or sad.

The bridges of his eyebrows raised subtly as his eyes blinked in awe. If it could be called that, his face was so stoic and he had many expression marks that it was somewhat hard to see. But she could see a shine in his eyes, something that made her blush.

THALES ~ 15b

“I knew there was something else different the moment you stepped into this room.”

“What do you mean?”

Shaking his head, Ulfric stood up and grabbed her by the shoulders, motioning for her to stand up as well. “I’m not exactly sure how to explain it, I just felt it. And I couldn’t feel more proud.”

“About me being Dragonborn?”

He shook his head once more, gently squeezing her shoulders. His hands were big and warm, and she could smell a faint but sweet aroma from him, possibly mead.

“I’m sure you’ve spoken to the Greybeards. How is Arngeir, and the rest of them? When I left, it wasn’t in a good note.”

Ahing in understanding, Thales smiled and looked up at the high ceiling. “He said I reminded him of you. Actually, he was the first person to suggest you as my father.”

“He is an incredibly perceptive man, a Greybeard after all. I remember the good old days when he was my mentor.”

Thales’ face flushed in excitement; her and Ulfric had something in common other than their blood. It was an incredible feeling.

“He was hard on me, but I learned much from him.”

Sighing, the man let her go and began pacing again. “Although I am disappointed at the fact that you cannot remain with the Stormcloaks, I understand the justification behind your decision. After all, you have proven to be a valuable asset, and with good reason. When will you be leaving?”

Biting the inside of her cheek, the Imperial began to think about that little fact. It was better to leave as soon as she could, there was a horn she needed to retrieve for Arngeir. But she wanted to remain by her father’s side. They are finally together! And who knew the outcome of both of their wars. It was disheartening to think that they might not see each other again.

No, she couldn’t think like that. They are Ulfric, leader of the Stormcloak Rebellion, and Thales the Dragonborn and daughter of said man.

“As soon as I come up with a plan. I cou—”

“Do come and say your farewell to me then. After all this is over, Talos allows us, we will have all the time in the world to become acquainted with each other.”

With a nod, Thales saluted him but as soon as she turned to walk away, Ulfric grabbed her by her arm and turned her back around. With slow movements, he pulled her to his chest and softly kissed the top of her head.
